I guess the idea is that most kids would want to become fast jet pilots (most wouldnt realise the fun that can be had piloting a 40yr old British built 4-jet 'liner Tonks  ) and the Hawk is the stepping stone to becoming a Tonka, Harrier or Typhoon pilot, and the Reds are the elite Hawk pilots.

The MoD sent me an Airfix kit of the Red Arrow's BAe Hawk when I started my Mech Eng course at University 6 years ago. I didnt join them  I got as far as an interview for BAE whilst at university and was offered an assessment centre after having graduated but I declined them too  I now work in Power generation! Sorry, going a bit O/T there!

I think it's just me, but I think I've seen this subject come up every year for about 5 years now. If it's not a PM's Petition, it's usually the Daily Express that manages to save the day (or so they claim, I hate the Express )

There was a bit on Radio 2 yesterday about it. Part of me agrees with Tonks, in that the money should be spent on opperational stuff first.... however, we live in a country (UK) were we now pay more in Tax in percentage terms than under any previous government in modern times. We have less state provided services and "The Reds" are a symbol of all that is good about our country. I feel very strongly that it would be a huge loss. If the Italians and French can have an aerobatic display team, surely the British can afford to keep theres... and provide the funds necessary for the RAF to opperate safely?

P.S. Has anyone seen the new Royal Navy ad featuring the 2 Harriers which were retired last year.

When you get re-assigned to desk work due to complaints of locals saying, "your bloody pilots have done it again, I was in the garden mowing my 2cm by 2cm lawn and one of those buggers came roaring over head... in my day....", can I have your job :P Although i'll expose myself to the linching party - I'd rather fly the TriStar :P

Somebody just did that to me here in my office.

I'm lucky in that my office is in Cirencester (when I'm there, which isn't often..) and it's directly under the eastbound flightpath from Kemble and the westbound path from Brize Norton! Not only that, the westbound path out of Fairford is just south of here too.

So what with VC-10s from Brize and Hunters from Kemble (where are the PR9s BTW???) it's a bit like the 70s here at times.
Regards
Kit
