VC10s t Brize Norton

Post by paul26may »

As it has been many years since I have seen a VC10 in action, I am planning a visit to Brize Norton. When is the best time to go?

Hello mate..

Tonks is the man with the best info but as a very rough guide.. AM rather than PM and the earlier the better. The local council have made it difficult for spotters in cars as the little park-up to the north of 26 is now edged with b/w bollards  Of the many times I've been, I've never been up t'other end so I don't know what the situation is there.

Hiya Paul

Tonks is a VC10 Captain at BZN (currently instructing) so is as au fait as anyone with the layout of the base and good spotting areas. He was in talks with the local council a few years back on the subject of them (the council that is) having a dedicated 'spotters' area and from what I remember, they were not unreceptive to the idea. However, the introduction of the bollards has since proven they were full of sh1t!! :poke:

Wouldn't mind a drive over one weekend from Essex to Brize N. in my new toy (Honda Civic Type-R) for some spotting, etc.

Is there a rough timetable of VC10 arrivals/departures, or rather say, certain times that would be better than others on a Saturday or Sunday?

I would have thought late afternoon is quite good on weekdays, as they're coming back from Tanking. When I've been, often a couple have come back at about 4 o'clock-ish, and they shoot the odd circuit....(usually).

You might want to check wind direction before you set off (to know which runway direction they're using). I have been to the '08' (western) end once - a footpath, bit of a walk to it, but then you'll probably have to walk to the '25' (Eastern) spot anyway (as you can't park).

Tonks - Keep pestering the Council!! :argue:

Don't have to go far for me to see one fly over, in fact out the back about half hour ago and lo and behold one went over. Not seeing so many these days
I sense a disturbance in the force

Hi,

I'm new to these forums but if you fancy seeing some vc-10's weekdays are the best. I'm from brize and am lucky enough to them them on an extremely regular basis. There doesn't ever seem tobe a regualr pattern of when they may be flying. one option is to park in the village car park and walk down to rw26 at brize its not that far!!
