Ever thought you had messed up?

Post by Nigel H-J »

On my return flight to Manchester from Amsterdam I had just levelled off at FL110. Still on auto-pilot I went to map view as forgot the frequency for the 06R ILS, whilst making a note of it there was a ping or something similar. My immediate thought was that I had allowed the aircraft to descend below FL100 still at 280kts and had just been warned of a penalty as I had read from Dave somewhere that you get this type of warning when you do wrong. !!

On checking my altimeter I was still at the correct height, checked landing lights, they were off. Again about three minutes later I got another ping followed by another some time later.

That was it, I was already about to abort the flight but then decided to continue and checked and double checked everything I did but still a ping!! I was getting worried, very worried, no Captaincy for me after this!!

Then relief........I found out what was causing it................The bl**dy mobile phone telling me it was down on battery, it was sat next to the speaker!!!! ..........That's it........it now stays outa the cockpit!!
I used to be an optimist but with age I am now a grumpy old pessimist.

I often fly with the TV on a few feet away and the amount of times I've sh1t a brick on hearing something on the box.. well, far too many I can tell you  Just like you.. check alt.. check lights.. quickly go outside and make SURE the lights are on/off!! I don't often fly anything fast enough to exceed any speed limits but when I do.. I pay particular attention to my speed

Last Saturday, Genoa/Manchester with the Trid, on short finals all set up perfect when.. tried to select F lock on the keyboard, so the reverse could be engaged, no keyboard at all!! sh1t, couldn't bug out either.panic..
Hit the power off button with 200ft agl, phew!, my wife's french and even she was impressed with my cursing, culprit was a large yellow lab curled up under desk with his tail wrapped around the keyboard lead.
Reflew the sector and ended up with my Capains rank anyway.

By the way guys, Fraser made me a cnfg line add for the viscount, places a warning light when the lights are on. She's a real bugger to tell with the switch posistion if they are on or off.

Robbie.

Love it Robbie. The number of times my Lab has come into the toyroom with her tail wagging and pulled the joystick USB lead out of the pc!! :-$ On one occassion coming out of Manchester in 'EP' bound for Shannon.. I heard one of those BONGS that you don't normally hear. I turned round to find she'd layed down on the joystick shoving the throttle fully open causing an overspeed

I did bug out of that flight as she was not PIC at the time and isn't registered on FlyNET
