In these security conscious times...

I used to be an optimist but with age I am now a grumpy old pessimist.

Hi Dan

That may be deliberate as a pop at the Guardian as it has a reputation for making more spelling errors that possibly any other newspaper

Yep, Garry is spot on. The Manchester Guardian has always had a reputation for typographical errors, hence the well-earned nickname of Grauniad. Other papers have their own nicknames - the Currant Bun, News of the Screws, Racist S***-Stirring Rag etc.

In reality, these days it is probably no better or worse than any other paper; what does set it apart, however, is it's willingness to admit to mistakes and publish regular amendments.

"The nickname The Grauniad for the paper originated with the satirical magazine Private Eye. It came about because of its reputation for frequent and sometimes unintentionally amusing typographical errors, hence the popular myth that the paper once misspelled its own name on the page one masthead as The Gaurdian, though many recall the more inventive The Grauniad. Although such errors are now less frequent than they used to be, owing to the end of hot-metal typesetting, the 'Corrections and clarifications' column can still often provide some amusement. There were even a number of errors in the first issue, perhaps the most notable being a notification that there would soon be some goods sold at atction instead of auction." - Wikipedia
