Just out of curiosity, did there used to be hard runways? I just can't imagine Gnats and JP's landing on the grass? :dunno:
Always grass...The JPs and Gnats were used purely for maintenance and marshalling practice on the hard-standings. I'm guessing they came in by road..but that was before my time...(first at Halton in 87)

Shame it's only FSX, I've got it but it runs so badly it's no fun to play. Only way I can run it well is to lower the graphics so it looks worse than my FS9! :dunno:

I'm sure it would have been spectacular Ben with all the dust and crap blowing around though the bomber would have been very light. Don't forget they considered bringing Concorde into Brooklands.. I believe it was done in the sim and was feasible.. but stopping the trains proved too difficult  OK.. Brooklands isn't a grass strip but their runway (as it ended up) certainly wasn't very long.

Flown in to Halton by none other than Wg Cdr Roly Beaumont.

IIRC the grass had a layer of psp planking underneath, which had been laid back in WW2 in case the airfield was needed on 'ops'

Cheers for that Pete. I have one of Bea's signed prints of XR219 on my bedroom wall. From what I have read and seen of him he was a great chap and fantastic pilot. Am I correct in saying he was the most highly decorated member of the RAF... the RAF's very own Col. Paddy.
