I don't believe that is true, I think you can change a line in the panel.cfg, which involves deleting a gauge, and then it will load up running. You'll have to see the documentation, it could just be the ARJ panel but I'm sure the 146 panel has this functionality too.

I don't believe it is that awkward to start either, I always do a cold start in FS and after a couple of runs, you can do most planes in 90 seconds or less, although the 146 probably takes a little longer because it has four engines. Never the less, what's the point in getting a fancy panel if you don't intend to operate all the systems?

Jon's model is fine but I don't like the flight dynamics that much. I think the best you can manage right now is to get the Eurowings 146 and pop in Lieberechts' panel, but that's not a cheap option.

I checked, the Avro RJ panel remembers the configuration it was in when you closed FS. In the BAe 146 panel.cfg there is a line:

gauge79=ML-BAe146FS2K4!Dark_Cockpit, 1025,75,10,10

I'm not sure if that's to do with night lighting or starting config but I suspect the latter, especially since it's at the end of the section so as not to upset the number of the gauges if deleted. Try deleting that line from the panel.cfg of the latest 146 panel from Matthias Lieberecht.

There's a good 3 146's in development at the moment.

2 of them are payware (CLS and Another) and there is also one that is still in development who hasn't decided if it'll be payware/freeware yet.

I don't think any of the modellers are known to this forum but from what I have seen from the A.N Other Payware model it will be truly stunning. I'll ask if I can post some shots here but I doubt the answer will be yes.

But of course that isn't freeware....AND I think its going to be FSX only. Which, although I'm a FSX convert these days, I still feel developers should be offering the choice.

All the best,

Alex

Mathias' panel comes with an updated FDE, iirc.

For anyone who isn't already aware, Matthias Lieberecht has released version 4 of his BAe 146 panel recently and there was some very encouraging news in his Forum about Jon Murchison's model for FSX AND FS9... Check it out at http://www.baepanelproject.com ;-)
