Heads Up on a bug...

Post by petermcleland »

If you go down to Ralph's posts in "Escorts", you will see that many characters in the text are not transposing properly...Many strange symbols are coming in and making copying not practical.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for letting me know. I'm guessing that something coruprion has happened during the backup of the old Database. All new posts should be fine, but if Ralph (or anyone else whoo has his posts saved) can send them to me I'll update the posts.

It seems like certain characters have been re interprited during the backup process, and although it doesn't make the text unreadable, I'd really like to get it fixed.

if anyone can help please PM me.

Cheers

Ben

Looks like a character set problem. In particular the ' character in for example "it's" appears to be translated as "â€" on my PC running Firefox and Unicode Character encoding (same in IE6). Anything other than Unicode gives me lots of other strange characters.

I'm assuming this is an update of phpBB, with perhaps an update of mySQL? Is MySQL running the same character set in the old and new versions?

Ian

PS That's about as far as my knowledge of all this goes :worried:

The MySQL Char set is (reputed to be) the same but it was an upgrade from a 3.4x DB to 5.1.x as the 3.x is no longer supported. I'd say you were spot on though Ian.

Ben,

I have Ralph's posts put together in a .pdf file...would you like me to upload it somewhere...it is only 133KB or a Word .doc file of 205KB?

Ben,

I've just deleted all my PMs to make room for yours but it is still on hold!

Hi Graham...well I thought that very recent picture by Toby Vickers was more appropriate...The hat was relevant to my Boating days, but alas I have now "Swallowed the Anchor" :crying:
