Wow! Some vague memories there and in colour.

That was the first air display that I ever went to - suddenly all those pictures in books were real - no idea how I got there - probably train and bus.

The Gnat was part of the "Yellow Jacks" team using airframes that then became the Red Arrows.

I have the Hunter recorded as an F6 (but since I can't tell the difference :o it must have come from a magazine)

I didn't even record G-ASJE was there - saw it a month earlier in service at Gatwick.

Hi Leif,
In the best traditions of these things, I stumbled across them by accident whilst looking for something else in the library at Tangmere. They were piled up on a shelf in a dusty corner and I ignored them at first but, on a whim, I looked in a couple of the boxes and I couldn't believe what I was seeing! After the reaction I got when I posted the '62 Farnborough set here, I knew they were something special and I got the Curator's permission to have them on loan and post a small selection here - this is the only place they are being shown, by the way.

Once I've sorted through them, I'll be discussing their future with the Curator - although most are not directly related to Tangmere (the ususal criterion for display in the museum) they're far too good to be left to rot unseen on a shelf as they have been so far.

Thank you Pete

We (the forum) are extremly fortunate to have you - they bring back far to many memories of my youth , when all I could think about was aeroplanes.
In a way it seems almost a sad reflection of the state of the British aviation industry that these photographs were left to rot on a shelf. They are the
pictorial equivalent of the Piper Cub that has sat in a barn for 45 years waiting for someone to discover it. No offence to the younger folks, but names like
The Black Arrows, Red Pelicans , Yellow Jacks even The Poachers (Learnt from when my brother was doing his flying training at Syerston and then Church
Fenton) tripped off the tongue then and the photographs brought back memories of trips to Farnborough, Biggin, Warton and Old Warden in the early
sixties.

Again we are all very grateful for you sharing these treasures

The most important thing about the find is that all the slides can (and are being) copied so any further degradation of the originals effectively stops here with their digital cousins ;-) Hat's off Pete for taking the job on ;-)

I can honestly say it's been a pleasure - and even a privilege - to make a (very, very small) contribution to preserving a little bit of British aviation history and to contribute something of interest to the Forum. What's made the effort so worthwhile is reading about the reactions of the forum members and hearing about the memories these photos are bringing back.

And as for choosing the CBFS forum on which to display them... well, where the hell else would they get such an appreciative audience! :tab: :) :)

Having been away a lot recently I've only just started looking at this superb collection of photos. Thanks for posting them here Pete.

The BAC 1-11 is still in prototype form. Note the landing lights in the wing leading edge, the round nose and the lateral wing fences which were much nearer to the fuselage on the production models.

G-ASJE was the fith 1-11 to fly on the 5th May 1964 and was delivered to BUA on 23rd July 1965 after completion of the airworthiness testing and after being modified to production spec of course.
