Cosford trip

Post by tonymadge »

Visited Cosford today to see one thing mainly and this was the disapointment I got.....
I had a little moan as I had driven 50 miles to see it and they could have put something on their website saying it was like this :@

Maybe there was a small boy trapped up there calling for help!

Nice to see the Brit going over to RAF Transport Command ;-)

I reckon she was thinking of how are going to "dust that" up there.. re the Brit sadly I think the RAF colours were the worst she wore, but at least it is one airliner Cosford kept.... Nixce to see the JP5's as well doing the marshelling manouvres. They were running the engines and taxing about.. other than that nothing else to mention of note.

Thanks for sharing Tony

What a terrible act of vandalism.

The Brit was never RAF and is the wrong mark.

They should put it back in airline colour or give it to someone who will.

Shameful manipulation of history.

Why not in one of the airline liveries that did trooping flights for the RAF.

Well Garry..

It's much like the Red Bull Sea Vixen isn't it. Not one person I know liked that scheme but all to a man (and woman) were happy to see it flying and if that was a consequence.. then sobeit. Although the Cosford Brit may not have ever served with the RAF, it IS another airframe that's not gone to the dogs. Pity they're not painting right though

I finally caved in and went at the beginning of July. I was stuck for a place to take the little 'un for a few hours.
I decided against posting a big moan about what I thought of it & wish I had now, it may have saved you the trip Tony. The scaffold was up on the lonely looking Brit then. (I guessed right what they were doing to it)

Considering it was purpose built, that new Cold War thing is awful. :$
I couldn't help wondering how much plain ordinary hangar space could they have built for the same price.
The old hangar 1 was a real joy to walk around afterwards. The aircraft look much better in a proper aircraft hangar setting.

Terrible spoiled view of the Valiant and Canberra as you walk in. A great big drum with a few graphics instead. :dunno:

There's also a Vulcan in there somewhere! :'(
Making the V force look that unimpressive really does takes some doing. No decent view of any of them.

Worst of all, there's a 'viewing' platform that you have to take a lift to get to.
It will scare the hell out of anyone with a healthy fear of heights, yet when you get up there you can't see most of the exhibits - including any of the V force.

And to add insult, the (fairly new) old purpose built building, the main entrance that cost loads of money, is now empty. The shop & cafe that it used to house was taking up space in the new place.
It's terrible.

Sadly all this looks like the all too common present day 'design' over anything else. Hard to believe someone somewhere actually came up with this let alone that it got past whatever committees etc. A big thanks for posting the images: it is now on my what *not* to do list.

Museum Aircraft always look better in the open air regarding lighting, space and ambience, and Cosford used to be a nice place to wander around (on a nice day) with lots of space and therefore a photograpers paradise! But we should be grateful that these Airframes are now under cover at all for long term preservation. BUT... I agree that with a bit more thought, something more practical could have been designed so that we can see the exibits in a more unobstructured way!

Regarding the Brit, well I think it should have remained in BOAC, albeit with a fresh coat of paint. We already have an RAF liveried Brit at Kemble, now.

Is the reg on the tail '497'? Would that be masquerading as XM497? The Kemble one is XM496!!
