I dunno if that doesn't defeat the object somewhat Bob as if you're not seeing any clutter.. including gauges, you might as well either pop outside to spot or make say.. the rear view on your POV hat show straight ahead. You can already select a down view windowed by using 5 on the numeric keypad so to see outside to land can be done.. just not by cutting a hole in the panel :) Ideally, VC's are best at this sort of thing.. if you can remember which way to move the POV hat (which I rarely can) :lol:

Yep, I new i would regret that post. :doho: I don't do much rotary wing flying. I find the thing to unstable, but prefer fixed wing anyway. I thought I would show willing by posting.

A bit like repainting, my tampering with panel files & bmp's can be counted in single figures per year, so I [continue] to doff my hat, [doff! how old am I?], to anyone who can make sense of what all the panel & aircraft cfg's do & make new ones.

Speaking of doffing the hat why not try TrackIR its a life saver and i would not use anything else now ;-) Better than the POV anyday.....

Hey Bob.. no need to regret that post at all matey ;-) It wasn't ridiculous or outrageous.. it was a way around a problem and quite an easy one at that! :) TBH.. using the '[' key to open another window then select '5+alt' on the numeric pad makes me feel nausious.. the views that is though it is interesting to hit your fire key or whatever it is you use to change views and have them all cycle in that window :cpu: The easiest thing for me is to have shift+z selected (it's always selected anyway and something I missed flying the C1K sim at Brize! :lol: ) and hit the 'S' key to go outside. The RIGHT way is the way you're comfortable with ;-)

FS does not actually do a thing to the aspect ratio when you change the panel's window size. It just changes the cropping. The best practice, that I've seen, is to use the full sized view window - meaning half of it or so will be below the panel - and angling the panel down a few degrees.

This seems to provide, in my view anyway, the best compromise, however, the latter change is the most significant. Very few panel designers take into account the fact that in a real aircraft you are looking down towards the panel and down the nose of the aircraft - this is why it's generally so hard to see the ground on approach from 2D views and not so much in 3D views, and I modify every panel I use accordingly, resulting in fewer problems.

It's what works for me, anyway...

My answer was made easier when I realised that the original Rotodyne panel had been made so that the 'outside forward view' (of the runway/countryside/cloudscape etc) covered the whole screen and not just the upper third.

Using MS 'Paint' I deleted the upper part of the panel and moved the whole of the remaining panel about 5mm towards the top of the screen. This gave me a better view of the area immediately in front of the aircraft and corresponds to the clear perspex(?) panel immediately in front of the pilot's boots. BY such means one can see more easily runway/ramp/pad markings. I then erased and re-drew the canopy frames which give one a reference to up/down & left/right when one is looking directly down to the front just prior to touchdown.

Having looked at the original panel I decided to forego realism and using panel studio I redesigned the whole thing so that no functionality is lost but all the instruments have been replaced and in some cases made larger.

I also fitted the Rotodyne with Rob's new VTOL gauge specifically designed for Ito's Rotodyne. This does allow truly vertical ascents and controled 'step' descents. Not arotor fan it has taken me la long time to realise that only very small movements of throttle & stick must be used to achieve control and proper landings. Please note that Rob's VTOL gauge is most realistic in real weather for the acft will drift with the wind on approach/touchdown and this must be compensated for correctly.
