Hi James,

That is correct matey as the contrail effect has been used for smoke. It's just below entry [fltsim.1] which is the Red Arrows Gnat..

[smokesystem]
smoke.0=-18.00, 0.00, 0.00, fx_smoke_ce_white.fx
smoke.1=-24.00, 0.00, 0.00, fx_contrail_s

This is how the original section looks. I have tried another file (but kept reference to the original) as seen below..
smoke.1=-24.00, 0.00, 0.00, fx_DisplaySmoke_Alpha EF.fx //fx_contrail_s

To be honest, the Alpha EF fx isn't exactly 'Red Arrows' quality but then again, it's not supposed to be either. Check out the freeware Hawk if you want full-blown Red, white or blue though I find these are a bit ott. Depends on what you want to see really ;-)

The fx files on your system will all be in the flightsim 'EFFECTS' folder so have a look in there and see what you have ;-)

Hi James,

This is an odd one and no mistakin'! :lol:

I didn't have that 3rd file (fx_Gnat_smoke.fx) in my EFFECTS folder but it was present in the zip :o Also.. the position of the [smokesystem] entry in the aircraft.cfg is a little wild as it doesn't usually live there. Not sure if it was put under the Red's Gnat just to make smoke work on that model with the 'I' key but it will work with ALL models. :)

OK.. where you see this entry in the aircraft.cfg...
[smokesystem]
smoke.0=-18.00, 0.00, 0.00, fx_smoke_ce_white.fx
smoke.1=-24.00, 0.00, 0.00, fx_contrail_s
...
change smoke.1 to read .. smoke.1=-24.00, 0.00, 0.00, fx_Gnat_smoke.fx and you'll get a nice billowy white smoke plume when you press the 'I' key.

Let me know how you get on ;-)

Whats the Smokesystem as I cant find this anywhere in my FS9 Folders? Or do you mean Rename contrail to smoke.1=-24.00, 0.00, 0.00, fx_Gnat_smoke.fx We getting there STUPID

Thank you for the help so far Dave CHEERS

The clues are there James :roll: Make sure you put the three fx files in your EFFECTS folder too.

I've just had a cr@p night in the kitchen and I should really bite your head off but I won't. :lol: However.. be warned that I'll only play this game a little longer before I 'pull the plug' ;-)

Look in your Aircraft folder and go down to the file called Simshed Folland Gnat TR1 then double click on that folder. It will open and show you a load of folders and two files. One of the files is called Aircraft.cfg and the other is something like SIMSHED FOLLAND GNAT TR1.air (something exactly like that) :) Double Click on the aircraft.cfg file and if it asks what program you want to open it with (which it must in your case) select notepad. The file will then open so read carefully down each line until you come to a section called [smokesystem]. This corresponds exactly to the information you've been given above. IF you have added the contents of the EFFECTS folder in the download to the EFFECTS folder in your flightsim9 directory and changed the line smoke.1= to read exactly as I've typed above.. then you will have a much nicer smoke when you hit the 'I' key.

I find it hard to believe James.. very hard to believe, that after all the online simming you do and after the amount of time you've frequented this humble abode.. that you don't know where the aircraft.cfg is but tonight, I'm feeling charitable. Read what has been typed and DO IT. If it doesn't work.. READ IT AGAIN and DO IT AGAIN. If it still doesn't work.. I'll add your name to the Readers Digest mailing list and from that.. there is NO escape ;-)

LATE EDIT AFTER GARRY's POST.. Make sure you 'enable' file extensions to be shown if you can't see anything called aircraft.cfg. If you don't know how to do that.. look on the Microsoft website for further details or look in the 'Help' file contained in your version of Windows!
