Concur with Rick, the MP is better, the water texture (after a recolouring) are better, AI ships are fantastic, the Mesh is more detailed, there is no way on gods earth I could have flown at 600knts at 200ft over VFR scenery in FS9 without it disapearing into a blur. Almost all the aircraft I fly have come over from FS9, and the ones that I don't fly still look fine as AI.

Also I really don't see the point in downloading a demo version that is over a year old and has been subject to 2 major patches which make a hell of a difference to it.

I do have a new machine, I do have FSX I will not be going back to FS9, but only because I'm very happy with FSX. I certainly wouldn't advise anyone to go out and buy it unless they have a pretty current system, but that will always be the case. I don't barate anyone for still liking FS9.

Its very Easy to make FS9 screenshots look good when either the aircraft are static, or the scenery is for a descreet area, but lets compair apples with apples.

More over can we knock this on the head. FSX is a year old now, its not new anymore, and will probably be replaced in a years time anyway.

I really used to love coming in here and seeing whats going on, but every fing thread is "FSX is sh*t3." I'm bored with it, can we all grow up and except that those who like FSX are having a good experience with it, those who don't are enjoying FS9. Thats as complicated as it gets. :-(

Time for a bit of live and live.

Hi Ian,

Generation X is the FSX version of the old VFR scenery and horizon mesh. I know, such a hypocryte after that, but it had to be said, this place is turning into the same old sh1t3 we get everywhere else and i really don't like it. :(

Wrong!!!
What's Generation X?
They were a dreadful punk rock act featuring the talentless Billy Idol....who now works as a developer for ACES

This is what Tony Madge and I feel about FSX...(sorry Tony)
Image

But that is our problem and if you enjoy your FSX experience good luck to you, now where is that copy of MS Train Simulator....

Ben..

I don't think trying the free download is gonna be a waste of time nor do I believe that the 'default' FSX looks much different with SP1 if at all (I don't have SP2 so can't comment). Better to try the trial and decide if you like it or not than to buy the real thing and find you don't.. unless you're like me who didn't download the trial but did buy the real thing including all the lovely GenerationX bits that don't work ;-)

Much is made of GenerationX and if all your flying is done within the confines of the UK (make that England and Wales) then yes.. who could argue how much better it looks. It's simply not possible to disagree with that fact. Mention was made of FS9 looking great 'with the right scenery' but isn't that exactly what FSX is with GenX??? Of course if f++kin is!! See the UK without GenX and it really is cr@p!

Minor rant over

You go for it Ian. You might be pleasantly surprised ;-)

Sorry Dave. Just not enough passion in that rant. The studio audience is still with Ben's performance, but hopefully the viewers at home will give you the support you need to get through to the next round

Maybe we should have an opinion poll about whether Ian should download the trial or not. Here's what I mostly do: Fly DM's fab four on short flights. I like the aircraft to look authentic and the airports and runways to look good and the navaids to be accurate. I'm not bothered about simulated water, trees, mountains, boats (ships?), vehicles or animals. Here's what I do it on: Acer laptop with a Core 2 Duo T7300 (2GHz processor), 2Gb RAM, 160Gb HD, GeForce 8600M GT graphics.

So what do you think? FSX trial download or a waste of time at the moment for Ian (and for Ian only)

Or should I go with Trev and dig out MSTS? Mind you, those poor sods are going through worse with the new Rail Simulator and MS's announcement of MSTS2 :-#

Havent really seen FSX with Genx but i do however conclude that FSX in default in the UK is crap, Sandy looking textures! Thats why i downloaded the "european ground textures" so my UK now looks more like the UK, Green!

Hi Ian,

A few general things first. Laptop disk drives are very slow at reading and writing (50% slower than a current SATA3 desktop disk drive) so for an appplication that makes more demands of loading more data quickly its not a good start. The reason I say SP1, is that on Multi core systems FSX performance is improved hellishly after SP1, as it spreads the load across the two cores. This makes a big difference if you have the kit.

If your Floying DM's fleet, you would find anything additional in FSX from FS9, and if your not bothered about the eye candy, and your enjoying your flying then I'd leave well alone. If you don't already have it, and your flying in the UK, the VFR scenery and Horizon mesh is a must for FS9, and that would probably be better use of your cash, although as Dave mentioned in only covers England & Wales. If you wanted some extra tit bits, then Iain Gallagher's Scotflight is excellent, so thats where I'd spend my cash if I were in your position.... if you've got all of that already, start saving for a new PC for FS11 :)

One  for Ian to try the download from here!

Chris..
GenX runs like a dog on my old dog although I'll try it one more time when SP2 becomes readily available to the masses at no cost :) I bought FSsceneX european textures and took em straight off again. They're as bad as the default if not worse  The UK goes from Tuscany to the Eden Project in one click of a button  So.. for anyone looking in.. DO NOT BUY FSSCENE'X' EUROPE textures unless you enjoy being disappointed ;-)

EDIT..
I missed the bit about SP1 spreading the load over 2 cores Ben. As it doesn't apply to me, I've seen no real improvement. On the plus side for Ian.. if he likes what he see's with the trial, he'll know that the 'real deal' should go better with SP1 ;-)
