When and Where?

Post by PeteP »

First let me apologise for not uploading any photos from the Michael Harries collection during the past couple of months. Unfortunately, a heavy work load on other museum projects such as the new SOE display and the introduction of touch screens has meant that I''ve had to, temporarily, put the restoration and preservation of these slides "on the back burner". However, I hope to start again in the New Year and selections will again appear here.

I the meanwhile, whilst looking for photos for the touch screen displays in the museum's photo library, I came across an album with these totally uncaptioned photos. My best guess is the North West Frontier in the late 20s or early 30s but can anyone do better? If it helps, the serial of the aircraft in the second photo is K2088 and, in the original, the pilot can clearly be seen to be wearing a Pith Helmet!

Any thoughts or info gratefully received.
Pete

Hi Pete :)

I think you're there or thereabouts mate. Those shots look familiar but I can't place where I saw them :brick: Perhaps the aircraft in shot are Hawker Audax.. yup, that rings a bell. See if this link puts things into place for you..

At a rough guess they are 39 squadron Hawker Harts from between '31 and '39 and the granite cumulus in the background of the first two shots may be K2 in the Karakoram.

Probably on a break from dropping bombs on the local tribes. Plus ca change - as the garlic munching surrender monkeys would say.

OK so it's in Russion

but scroll down and you can see that K2088 is a Hawker Hart (India)

Stunning shots;
For anyone who does not have it, I heartily recommend the Sandmann Mesh for this area - it is simply stunning even on my PC!

And I thought I'd try and compare one of the shots posted to how it looks in FS9 with a Spit (Alpha freeware) - please excuse my incorrect angle and screengrab before the PC had fully rendered - but you get the drift...... :flying:
