Have you ever heard of BVE? BVE is a Japanese freeware rail simulation. The graphics are rather 2D-ish (no vc) but look quite nice. The simulation really shines in its overall immersiveness. The sounds are incredible (wheel flange squeals, station announcements, etc) , the cab darkens when you pass under bridges and enter tunnels, and the cab sways as you ride along the route. Here's a couple of pics from the 'Birmingham Cross-City South' route created by Anthony Bowden.

simulating drunken enginers eh? swaying about.....
this does look interesting , never had me no train simulator before..
There used to be a couple of high-speed routes for the previous version of BVE, but I've seen none for the current version. Some of the Tube routes seem like they're high-speed when you're racing through the dark. The Tube routes are actually a lot of fun...although I get distracted by the adverts in the stations which causes me to overrun my stopping mark.
That's a good question. I'm using Windows XP and it performs great. Here's a link to a group of BVE fans currently trying to make it run on Vista. http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=13429 Hope this helps.
