HS748 engine failure in flight

Hi guys,

can anyone help me with this charming HS.748? She handles alright on the ground and during the initial climb, but all the time I pass 10.000 ft I have an engine failure. All the time it's #1 engine. I can relight it for a short while, but then it fails again and shortly thereafter #2 quites as well. From there on it down to the ground ...
I tried all i know to prevent this from happening, kept the TGT below 730°, never exceeded 14200 RPM, had a good airspeed, reasonable climb rate, kept an eye on the oil pressure and temperature, but still ... at some point in time the torque PSI drops and then the bl.... engine quites.

Any idea?

Hi Markus and welcome

Most likely reason for your failure is fuel heating not switched on. Rule of thumb.. if you suspect your OAT to drop below 5degC (we're lucky to even see that in the UK at the mo!!).. turn fuel heating ON. I do this as a matter of course before each flight and have never suffered a failure ;-)

As Dave says, Filter Heaters on after takeoff (dont think there's an AUTO position on that panel :think: ).

Power unit de-icers must always be on in the air below +10'C, and on the slow cycle below -6'C. Make sure the green lamps on the Engine Anti-Ice panel are cycling and the ammeter showing current draw ;-)

Make sure you have no yellow lamps showing once you are airbourne.

almost every screenshot of the VC i have ever found on the net does not have the generators running.

Keep an eye on the engine exhaust temp and torque. Both usually drop before it quits indicating that you either have inlet icing or fuel filter icing.

You missed the fuel heaters Joe.. second pair from the bottom on the last but one shot. You're pointing to Water Meth and fuel trim.. neither of which will cause an engine failure ;-)

Fear not Joe. I think you really have to fly the thing daily or have been on the beta crew to get used to all the 748's foibles ;-) One thing I always do is try and fly with the miminum of switch making.. presuming that the general public will do the same (and don't we all) My personal checklist is much shorter than the 'correct' one but it's at a level where I don't fall out of the sky and that's important
LH Panel
Generators - On
Engine de-ice - On (slow)
Landing lamps on
That's that panel done

Pitot's - On

Centre window as in last shot from bottom..
Fuel Heaters - On

Right hand window..
Nav lights - On

That's it.. RTG ;-) I modify the controls in the LH panel depending on temp but basically, you can get away with the above only Starting from cold is a slightly different affair but I rarely have time for that. P2 warms her up and I fly
