Sorry, I have no sense of smell but was sure I recognized the sound and shaking as the dog.. come to think of it, it could have been the wife!

Here in SE Oxfordshire, I was lying in bed when I heard the house or rafters creeking, culminating in a single gentle movement which felt more like a wave, rather than a jolt. It lasted for about 5 seconds. Nothing displaced or damaged.

Interesting experience, but in hindsight, I would like to have experienced it a bit longer, as I find it fascinating!!......

I have duly filled in the BGS questionaire.

Up this end of Oxfordshire I didn't feel a thing. Neither did Mrs HC.

Believe me, Chris 558, you wouldn't have found it so fascinating if it had lasted longer . In the one about 23 years ago, which occurred at about 8 am , I was just about to leave for work, when there was a noise like an express train going through the house, and it began to sway. After about 10 seconds the swaying became greater in amplitude, and more rhythmic. It was terrifying because it became clear that when the the swaying frequency coincided with the resonant frequency of the house , it was likely to collapse. indeed, one did, no more than 15NM from us. Fortunately, after about 30 seconds total duration you could feel it travel away, but not before it had bounced my wife on a stool right down the kitchen, about 14 feet

Chris far from me to criticise anyone who makes comments on this forum but I do find it strange that you would have liked to have experienced it a bit longer. :think:

From your writing it appears that you only felt a slight motion, should you have been here 14 miles from the epicentre you would have been extremely relieved when it finished. I can only say that the noise was likened to that of being under a long railway bridge with a number of trains going across overhead and the shaking was particularly unerving .

That ten seconds was ten seconds too long, I never want to experience that again!!

I felt the quake down here in Bridgwater..I was in bed reading at the time and felt a sudden sense of disorientation and a feeling in the pit of my stomach as if I was about to be violently ill...this lasted just a few moments. When I saw the news the next morning I realised what had caused it.

Having experienced a major quake when I was living in Central America I can assure everyone that is it not pleasant. That one was centered in Honduras and hit Belize at about 6am. I woke to find the house had turned to rubber, with the walls, floor and ceiling all seeming to move in different directions...the bed dropped from below me and I had the oddest sensation of floating. Not something I would like to repeat.

Not often I send these types of things out but with the earthquake the other night it really makes you think...

With all the news on TV lately about the hurricanes that America is experiencing, the typhoons in China, flooding in Switzerland and recent mud slides in South America, we shouldn't forget that the UK has its share of devastating natural disasters too.

Attached is a photo illustrating the damage caused to my home from the earthquake that occurred the other night.

It really makes you cherish what you have, and reminds us not to take things for granted.
