Is it real, or is it Ricks ? ;-)

I never quite got to 208 Sqn... 207 (formerly 7Sqn RNAS), but not 208...Techy111 wrote:Something in common Peter.......I was with 208Sqn in the early 80's at Lossie with the Buccs.....petermcleland wrote:Great shot Trev...The markings indicate that it belongs to 208 Squadron, which I served on in Kenya. Thanks very much for these pointers...I'm just poring through them now
I found three pictures of my old Hunter FGA9 "Echo" in the 8 Squadron Gallery among those pointers:-

Here she is being marshalled onto the 8 Squadron line as a "208 Orphan", still wearing her 208 livery in 1963.

Here after being repainted in 8 Squadron livery as A "Alpha" in about 1963.

And finally here, a landing at Khormaksar showing the chute streamed in 1964.
Two years later she was written off after an engine fire.
Thanks again for pointing me to all this nostalgia :flying:

Hi Peter
How does the marking tell you it's a 8 squadron aircraft?

Steve,
I'm fairly sure the pretty colours either side of the roundel are squadron specific, and in the first shot the chevron on the nose is a 208 sqn specific marking.

Re: I could not resist posting this shot!!!
Yes, as Skippy says, those are the correct details...I know about the fire and the write-off and other details from a DVD by David J Griffin called "HAWKER HUNTER...UK and Foreign Serials 1951-2006"...Here is a quote from it:-
743. XE609 ff 10-06-56. Cen. Fuse. C/N 41H-679967. No 33MU. No.54 Sqn. ('R'). Returned to
HSA, 1959. Conv. to FGA Mk.9, which involved installing a full
tropical kit, gun blast deflectors, stronger inboard pylons, Explosive
Release Units on the outboard pylons, braking parachute and fitting of
an Avon 207 engine.. No.8 Sqn. ('A'). No.208 Sqn. ('E'). Engine fire at
Khormaksar. W/O, 07-04-66.
Here is "Echo", by Dave Garwood, in FS9 at McLeland Field:-

This is the correct livery for 208 Squadron, that she wore when in my care
In case you didn't know, that is her in my signature banner

For Skippy Bing,
http://www.rafweb.org/Menu.htm#Sqn%20Markings
Some Squadron markings are adaptations of colours in the official crest, others
are more heraldic,or symbolise events in Squadron history.
For example; the yellow stripe in 3 Sqn's 'bars' comes from an event in WWI, when their airfield
was under threat from t'other side, the pilot's jumped in their planes and p**** off leaving the air observers and groundcrew
to face the music.
