Airfield, North East England, but whats it called?

That is indeed a heck of a trip for a recce Peter, but who knows! Thanks for taking the time to look up your log book for me. I'm facinated by these airfields that are all over the place; that used to be hives of activity. Wish I had been a teenager over here in the late 50's and 60's, I'd have been in my element.

Runway lengths?...Well in those days I think they were the usual 2000 yards

According to google earth, 1980yds, give or take. ;-)

Superb stuff! It is a delight to see your experiences expressed in pictures as well as text. Please, dig out what you can! I am sure that all of us are very, very interested in your past. I have never, ever been anywhere near box position but am sufficiently aware of the skill and concentration that you would have call upon when carrying out those manoevres.

I found a great picture while browsing through those pointers...It is my lovely old "Echo" XE609...She is shown three years after I last flew her, when she had been transferred to 8 Squadron. She was now made A "Alpha" (Alpha is normally the Boss's aircraft). The picture shows her landing at Khormaksar with Tail Chute in 1964. Two years later she was written-off after an engine fire...Here is the reference:-

743. XE609 ff 10-06-56. Cen. Fuse. C/N 41H-679967. No 33MU. No.54 Sqn. ('R'). Returned to
HSA, 1959. Conv. to FGA Mk.9, which involved installing a full
tropical kit, gun blast deflectors, stronger inboard pylons, Explosive
Release Units on the outboard pylons, braking parachute and fitting of
an Avon 207 engine.. No.8 Sqn. ('A'). No.208 Sqn. ('E'). Engine fire at
Khormaksar. W/O, 07-04-66.

Hi folks

Haven't been here for a while but just had to write when I saw this.

I spent many hours at RAF Ouston in the late 60's, at that time it was under care and maintenance but housed the Northumberland UAS, No.8 AEF and 624 VGS.

My contact with Ouston was with the latter two units as I was a member of 346 (Tynemouth) squadron ATC and we did our air experience flynig and glider training there.

Based there at the time were Chipmunks, Sedberghs and TX3's :flying:
