I recall it mentioned elsewhere that the RAF has already stated on numerous occasions that they don't mark the 90th as one of the big dates to celebrate on the "official" calendar so even if the forces were not stretched so thin I doubt anything more would have been organised
We had a nice big formation of Tucanos over York Minster today for the 90th, that was something of a pleasant surprise. And I believe the BBMF were are part of the celebrations somewhere as well. :flying:

Apologies. I had no real idea, I was simply referring to the Hunter under Tower Bridge as Flt Lt Alan Pollock felt that nothing appropriate had taken place to mark the RAF's 50th.
I still believe the Typhoons, Red Arrows, and BBMF is fair enough for something that isn't the 50th/100th/150th. Aside from the aforementioned diamond 9 of Tucanos I believe there was also a formation of 9 Typhoons floating around somewhere at sometime as well. It could really be far worse... it could be nothing at all.

That was the biggest event in my lifetime and although I never went there it was well known about. There were even an LP record in stereo of the sounds made by some of the aircraft of the first 50 years narrated by Douglas Bader.

Had a 'diamond 9' of Typhoons fly over Benson on route to Hendon last night. I say diamond 9, they did an 8, one offset and then another Typhoon flew past about 30 seconds later on its own

HMQ is reported to have cancelled a party at The Ritz Hotel because the country is currently in such a poor economic state.
Perhaps the CAS made the decision on flypast size to avoid being accused of mis-spending the tax-payers money in flying more aircraft over London and criticism by the 'green lobby' regarding the increase in carbon footprint brought about by ordering a 'maximum effort' on this anniversary.
Perhaps, with two wars on the go at present, everything was where it should be - and when the SASO 'Group Captain Hubbard' looked in the cupboard labelled "UK Assets" he found, as did his great, great grandmother many years ago that the cupboard was bare, or nearly so.
If force reductions continue we might celebrate the 100th Anniversary by flying 100 UAVs, controlled by ten SAC acft remote controllers, in a force HQ 'somewhere in England' right round the UK before powering through Admiralty Arch and down The Mall!
To be honest I don't see the 90th anniversary celebrations being too small, I can't really remember any celebrations for the 80th which is arguably no different. If it was the 100th I'd say things were pretty dire, but you really can't justify having a massive flypast every time it's your birthday otherwise the non-aviation enthused members of the general public might start to think you're taking the p***.
