UK Mesh?

Post by Paolo Lao »

Hi all, is there a UK mesh out there that most of you mates commonly use? covering the whole of UK with compatibility with the UK2000 freewares & other sceneries. :cpu:

In FS9 (not sure about FSX) all mesh sceneries tend to muck up things like UK2000 airfields. I un-installed my add-on mesh (cannot remember which one I had) as I got annoyed with having nice detailed airfields stuck up on a high sided plateaus! As far as I know, this is still the case.

I can't recall ever seeing a problem with airfields being stuck up all over the place like that with either of the meshes I used for FS9, that was the FSGlobal Europe mesh and also a freeware mesh that used to be available on Simviation. There were few minor airfields that had problems with meshes but in general everything worked as it should, and I never saw any UK2000 incompatibilities?

Yup.. I'd agree with that Trev. The one marketed as being compatible with UK2000 (actually.. it's the other way around) is UKVFRTerrain Mesh (VFRTERRAIN) marketed by Horizon. This updates the UKVFRPhoto scenery (the one originally sold for FS2002) and gives a realistic mesh for England and Wales. If you're looking at FSX.. then GenXv2 is the way to go. This has photo scenery similar to the 2004 version and terrain mesh built-in. All of the above are payware.

If you want a good 'free' alternative.. you could do worse than UKGenesis terrain mesh. Genesis is traditionally payware but as luck would have it.. the demo area is the UK (though I'm not sure if this covers Scotland too) ;-)

Whichever one you go for.. not all your airports are going to be bang on. I get ground texture tearing at places like East Midlands and Luton (the ground textures run away from you in a wave as you come in to land.. most anoying!) and I'm certain there are others too but by and large.. VFRTerrain isn't bad. It's surprising just how lumpy the UK is (even England) with a good terrain mesh ;-)

But surely we are looking for the impossible here?

We want add-on mesh to make the landscape more accurate. But the more accurate it is, the stranger the airports will look. For the majority of airports and airfields are not flat, as they have to be in the architecture of FS9. Whatever you choose, you have to accept a compromise.

Best wishes,

John

Dave,

Ground texture tearing can be caused by having too high a value for TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS= in the FS9.cfg file.
You might want to back that file up and experiment with lower values for that parameter. I would tell you what my setting is but since everyone's system is different, I doubt what works for me, would work for you. You just have to experiment.

My problem with the Genesis mesh showed up in Scotland, among the bonnie, bonnie lochs. The water texture would appear white then flash, and then finally settle down as you got closer, very unsightly. Made me thing there were several monsters besides just Nessie causing a wee bit of havoc. I lowered the TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS parameter and that fixed it.

Still haven't figured out why the Scots are rubbish at tennis, but that's another story. ;-)

Hi Nigel :)

I guess that's possible and it's something I'd not considered. I fixed it the other way.. by removing UK2000 Luton and EastMids
