Oh no! I hope DaveB doesn't see this - he'll go off on one of his FSNav tirades! I hope he's got plenty of happy pills!

I think Dan, SAS had it in service first, a few days before Air France
That's correct correct !

French certification of CARAVELLE 3 was approved on April 2nd 1959 and F-BHRA handed over to AIR FRANCE on the same day .... however .... the first delivery (F-BHRB) had actually occurred some 2 weeks prior.

A few weeks prior to this F-BHHI had been leased to SAS for crew training .... and according to my information .... this aircraft operated both the first SAS CARAVELLE revenue service and indeed the very first ever CARAVELLE 3 revenue service on April 26 1959 between Copenhagan and Middle Eastern ports .... some 10 days ahead of AIR FRANCE.

Sadly SAS was also the very first airline to ever "PRANG" a CARAVELLE too .... on January 19th 1960 (OY-KRB "Orm Viking") landing at Ankara and with a loss of 42 lives.

CARAVELLE 3 entered revenue service with AIR FRANCE on May 6th 1959 on its Paris/Istanbul route.

A lot of folks don't realise it too .... at least I haven't seen it come up here ! .... yet ! .... but ....Sud Est Aviation were also licenced by De Havilland to use the entire COMET nose section for the CARAVELLE .... though its flightdeck lypout was probably considerably more tidy looking/better presented. The aircraft was also the first jet airliners .... or at among the very first ! .... to employ its own airstairs entry under the lower rear fuselage.

Quite an innovative bird for her time !

I think I'll stay with the VC10, never really trusted anything that had to be entered in the rear .... :$ :-#

LOL.

Talking about the rear, was the Caravelle the first airliner to have rear-mounted engines?

It nudge's the sim that little bit further towards realism! And boy does she need some stopping distance on landing. I don't think I'll ever take reverse thrust for granted ever again!
I flew on a Caravelle in the Seventies from Paris to Heathrow when on detachment to the Paris Air Show, (Pity it wasn't a Trident, but there you go). I could not understand why all the passengers clapped when the aircraft landed but from Eddies' remark above.............Now fully understand why!!! :worried:
