I used to fly control line planes as a kid, long before I could afford to upgrade to RC control. I also used to build free flight gliders made from balsa with tissue paper covered wings sealed with dope. I remember building one with a 6ft wingspan when I was barely 5ft tall myself. Happy days!

LOL....but you could still get 'high' if you applied the dope in an enclosed space! I remember applying dope to one model in the lean-to extension to the house with all the doors shut as it was raining outside and my mother didn't want the smell getting into the house. I damn near passed out as I went very light headed and started seeing dancing colours wherever I looked. :o
I opened the doors after that experience, rain or no rain...lol.
I was at the British Model Flying championships last weekend (after a break of 25 years)
These days all the RC is digital, loads of powerful electric motors, lightweight batteries - it's all changing.
Still lots of diesel and dope but probably a dying breed.
Some fantastic and very fast scale jets, with real gas turbines.
When I was a kid our next door neighbour built a plane and gave it to me complete with engine though unfortunately when my father took me to a disused airfield he could not get the engine to start, so sadly that was the end of that.......It just lay dismantled in the house.....Cannot remember what became of it!!

I used to be an optimist but with age I am now a grumpy old pessimist.
