Blame it all on Franz Zappa. With him choosing Dweezil and Moon Unit for his kids names nothing is beyond belief. Makes Bristol and Track (Ms. Palin's eldest son) seem almost normal by comparison.

Paul K wrote:Just reading about McCain's new running mate in the US elections, and she has a daughter named Bristol ! What on earth was the woman thinking of ? You're a great bunch over there, but do you have some strange tradition of naming children with the first word that comes into your heads ?

Chelsea Clinton, Bristol Palin...what next ? Bridgend Obama ??
Don't forget her other daughter, Piper. Seems to be a bit of an aviation theme with the Palin's, eh? In fact, her husband IS a licensed pilot...so maybe the Bristol/Piper connection is an homage?

Oh, and if you think us colonials have strange naming conventions.....well, I have a sister named Barrett, a nephew named Cannon, and a brother-in-law named Temple. Oh, and my mom's name is Gray.

If you think I made that all up, I'm not that clever.

P.S. - Leif, I agree with and echo your sentiments 1000x! That's all I'll say on the matter...

The daughter named Piper is for the airplane manufacturer (they own a Piper Super Cub on floats) and Gov. Palin is a licensed pilot as well.

According to what I've found, Bristol's name is not for the city or the airplane, but beyond that, the "significance" is unknown to me. I'm sure in due time it'll become known, it seems they want to know everything else about her.

The colonists do appear to have cornererd the market on unusual first names - isn't Cher's daughter named Chastity? Why would you burden a daughter with that?

Anyway I was going to say that the UK wins as far as place names. I can just look at the ordnance survey and laugh - Pratt's Bottom, Barton under Needwood, Upper this, Lower that, and the one that trumps them all - Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. Then I remembered some places here in the colonies, like Blue Balls, PA and Intercourse, PA (I am not making it up), and I decided to withdraw my case.

:doho: I hope Blue Balls is within reasonable proximity to Intercourse. :kissu:

Cut-n-Shoot, Texas. Look it up. Also Truth-or-Consequences, New Mexico; Why, Arizona; Weiner, Arkansas; Spasticville, Kansas; Hot Coffee, Mississippi; Odd, West Virginia; and last but not least Virgin, Utah.

Weird and wonderful names abound.
