Great part was what the controller did........'Contact Southampton blah blah blah.........' and gave them no assistance!! Since that incident they introduced more robust emergency training for ATCO's.

And all because the wrong screws were used. Crazy!

For those with access to Sky it's worth checking National Geographic to see if the programme is repeated, they tend to repeat "Air Crash Investigation" quite a bit.

Does anyone know if the aircraft the senior steward refers to when he says he asked to be taken off Birmingham when aircraft with similar windscreens were introduced were the Avro RJs? I doubt it would be the 737 fleet BA replaced most of the 1-11s with, nor the Minibuses they briefly flew out of Birmingham, so I wonder if the RJ/BAe146 has a similar outside-fitted windscreen to the 1-11?

The point is.. even though the chap asked for Gatwick as he was familiar with it and got Southampton, he was radar vectored by the controller there which I'd have thought would have been the easiest way to do it as it must be easier to guide someone toward you than away from you. If the footage is to be believed, the handover was very swift (as long as it takes to dial in the freq) so I don't think he was left to fend for himself. All things considered, a great piece of airmanship with a most satisfactory end result ;-)

I know we've discussed this before and I mentioned that Capt. Tim Lancaster ended his British Airways career on 747-400s so I flew with him a couple of times. He had suffered no post-traumatic stress, simply because he had no memory whatsoever of the incident! He was quite happy to chat about it, but then again he could only repeat other peoples' stories - despite that, he rarely had to buy a beer!

Nigel Ogden, the steward who held on to him, wasn't so lucky. He didn't cope well at all. I've found this article of him telling his story to an Aussie newspaper.

Hindsight is one thing, passing the buck rapidly is something else! I know the controller who was passed said buck, his version of events is slightly different to the one published.
