Leuchars weather

Post by forthbridge »

Took the decision not to head this year, even with the Vulcan, based on weather forecasts - with a southerly breeze and at best drizzle it would be a wet camera at least. Flying due to commence 1000 hours but as you can see from the St Andrews webcam, weather ain't exactly good:

Still thankful that's all I can bemoan looking at what's happening elsewhere with weather mind you.......

St-rewth Jim.. I think you've made a wise decision there mate. I'd be surprised if anything flies in that muck :-(

Yes Dave, a little downhearted to miss the Vulcan, but even now the conditions are poor:

Don't worry, I'm sure you will have heard by now but the Vulcan didn't perform anything bar a fast taxi run, and neither did many items on the display list. The cloudbase was so low that nothing at all did a full display, most items were limited to a few flypasts and the closest we got to a proper display was the half a Typhoon display before the pilot knocked it off due to the mist rolling in off the estuary. Many items simply performed taxi runs and even more didn't even make it to the show. Still, it was an enjoyable day and the ladies and gents at Leuchars tried very hard to cobble together some kind of show in appalling conditions so hats off to them.

Yes, I do feel for those who went only to see such weather - maybe not such a good idea to book in advance as you feel obliged to turn up.

The *last* time XH558 was at Leuchars, the weather was amazingly similar - but at least it got airborne then (and provided welcome warmth from it's exhausts) - here's a poor quality print I found during a bout of box-rummaging....

Methinks some dim-wits have been complaining already about what did/not fly yesterday - do some people live on a different planet? .............................from the Airshow front page....

Welcome to The Royal Air Force Leuchars Airshow
Official Website.

Despite the poor weather conditions the aircraft able to display under the meteorological conditions worked tirelessly to put on the best displays they could. The Civil Aviation Authority rules governing displays is extremely clear and the safety of the aircrew and public on the ground is paramount.

Any comments regarding the Show should be directed to the address below.

Shame you could not come down here, 4 months of clear skies and no airshows for at least 300 miles in any direction, bar some canadairs dropping water on hillside fires!
