Just an FYI

Post by Tarasdad »

It is very likely that within the next few (3-5) months my wife and I will be moving to Lancaster, California. We lived there with her grandparents when we first moved to California, until we could get a place of our own. Her mom is now trying to purchase a new house there and the grandparents will be moving in with her once she does. We would then move into the other house again and rent it to help the grandparents finish paying off the mortgage. Once we are moved in I will be going to Texas to help my dad pack up and clean up his house, then most likely taking him to West Virginia for a brief (and probably last) family visit before bringing him back to Lancaster to live with us. He's nearing 80 and needs someone to look after him.

There is no solid timeline on this as of yet. I do know that I'm going to have to start pre-move preparations right away in order to get them done by the time it happens. What this means is that I have very little extra time for the foreseeable future. I will be occupied pretty much 24/7 getting things ready beforehand, and out of touch for probably several weeks to a couple of months minimum afterward. Hopefully once I get my dad settled in we'll get a more regular routine established. Until that happens chaos is the order of the day. HELP

Hi Barry,

Thanks for the info, hope all goes well with the moves and everything else. If you want to keep your account/records active at FSA, just make sure you visit the FSA site and log in with a time gap no longer than 3 months between log ins.

Regards

John

Hi Barry,

I hope it all goes smoothly...that sounds like a lot of organizing and travelling to do....

UPDATE

Well, the mother-in-law had a bid accepted on one of the houses they were looking at! Escrow starts Monday and will close on Nov. 24. They should start the move-in process soon after. The new place is right at 3 miles (4.8km) from their current house, so moving can basically be done with their minivan and a pickup truck. Well, and a couple of strong backs - if, that is, my brothers-in-law will get off their lazy butts and help! Our move, on the other hand, is about 67 miles (109km) one way. Last time we moved (from there to here, literally) about 5 years ago we did it by car, pickup truck and minivan. This time I think we're going to bite the bullet and rent a small moving van.

I still don't know what the schedule for us moving up there will be, nor what we'll have to come up with in the way of furnishings. One thing for certain is that Grandpa's wood shop is staying put since there isn't room for it at the new place. That means I get access to lots of nice woodworking tools with only one caveat - I have to make some new bookshelves for the mother-in-law. I figure something in oak or cherry, maybe some really clear fir.

As I said above one of the main reasons we're doing this is so I can bring my dad out to live with us. Those plans may have met with a setback, as my dad just found out he has a heart valve that is badly damaged. He's got an appointment on Monday to meet with the VA (Veteran's Administration) heart surgeons to see if they are going to try to do surgery to repair or replace it or leave it be. Apparently this isn't something recent, but has been slowly degrading for the last 25 years or more. Obviously if the decide to do the surgery it could have a major impact on when he could come out west to live with us.

Ain't life grand...
