It seems acceptable to choose to liberally sprinkle films like 'Pulp Fiction' and 'Apocalypse Now' with 'nigger' and 'gook', but in an unavoidable and relatively benign historical context it is deemed unacceptable. Bit bizarre, I must say.

On the other hand, Nigger's name is a relatively minor aspect of the Dambuster's story as a whole. Its the CGI Lancasters whizzing round the flak towers like X-wing fighters thats really going to piss me off.

They must be careful Paul :worried:

As this documents real events they must not show people getting hurt as that mugh offend some :-#

Then after the film we can all adjust the FDE of our Lancasters to match the ones in the film as everyone know that's how they flew because they've seen it in a film

Or perhaps just make it as it was or forget it.....names and all

Yes, it would be highly offensive but I find this highly ironic since a lot of Rap music makes liberal use of the "N" word. I just hope that in other aspects the film remains true to the facts and that it is not Americanized ala "The Great Escape" among others.

I am confused, everyone knows that TRIGGER pulled the fastest milkcart in the west :$ , he did not belong to Guy Gibson! I am waiting for East Anglia to be portrayed by the 'flat' countryside of South Island NZ too!

Stephen Fry will make a good job with the script, Gibson was a real public school 'prig', to say the least. This does not mean he was not damn brave BTW, just a description made by many people who flew with him.
Very much 'matey' with those of his own class and 'stuffy' with those of lower (i.e. non-commisioned) ranks. Mr Fry has a knack of portraying the english 'Old Boy/ public school network members, as he himself (and pretty much every satirist for the last 50 years) has come out of the same system themselves.

My Mum was a schoolgirl in Leeds during the war and Guy Gibson paid them a visit.

He gave a little talk to the kids

Of course this is OFFTOPIC .....but I thought I'd mention it :)

Firstly, I don't want to start a character bashing thread but in the past I've heard a fews stories regarding Guy Gibson but have always wondered whether they were true, so what sort of person was he to others' who served with him? Did he treat those that were of junior rank as lesser mortals than himself and how did he treat the crew that he flew with?

Again, this is only of interest, not to berate. For any-one who is put into combat of any form then the experiences and stress involved must have some sort of effect on a persons character? :dunno:

One would also assume that said dog leaving the Officers Mess drunk and leaving a yellow trail across the parade ground (from the book) will also be verboten

It's not just the name of the dog, Nigger was also used as the code word for the successful breaching of the Mohne dam.
