Now days the livery is just to promote the RAF. I liked the 19 Squadron anniversary Hawk with the Spit camo. those people who thought it was boring dont understand that this was done to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the squadron as the first operational fighter squadron to fly the Spitfire from Duxford in 1938.


And no worries about it going off topic I can now tell my brother the differance between a Enthusiast and a Planespotter Anorak Which he calls me :@ brothers who have them.

Ive been attending the Open house at Nellis AFB for five years now

Its always a pleasent day (or two) out - lots to see - Tag has lots of cockpits to crawl into

HOWEVER - in the last two years the show has become more and more intolerable because of just the sort of people
you describe above -- Now let me explain to you all about Nellis Open House -- It is for all intents and purposes a
"Family" day for the whole of Las Vegas - There is no entrance fee (a three dollar bus ride from off base parking to the
gates) access is incredible to all the facilities - It is a gift from the Thunderbirds to the service families in LAS and
to the populace who support them here......Its aimed directly for children - of ALL ages -- however as I say in the last
two years it has been spoilt by rude , inconsiderate, Germans and Brits of the Anorak persuasion -- I dislike being told
to F**k Off by a spotty creep with as you described an oversized lens (obviously over compensating for a lack of something
elsewhere) because I had my son on my shoulders standing at the taxi-by fence so he could wave at the pilots (who were
waving back, not at the cameras, at the kids) This brainless idiot obviously had flown in on Virgin with a group (Herd)
of his brethern -- and had been up and down the flight line making themselves unpopular with locals by pushing infront
of people and being generally obnoxious - The really sad thing was -- within two days - I saw Photos that matched the POV
that my wife had been taking shots (and she wasnt concerned about getting heads hands kids etc in her shots) on Airliners.net by these worthies --- as far as I am concerned if this is the behaviour we can expect from them -- they can stay the hell away from
Vegas.

C'mon Garry, you must know that PR is far more more complicated than that and there are a million and one reasons that anyone with a modicum of intelligence can figure out that will explain why the paints on the display aircraft are good for promoting the RAF to the taxpayer, especially given the current anti-military sentiment that is so prevalent amongst the great unwashed.

I think it's a waste of money

The financing for the RAF will not be changed by public conception of their worth as a fighting force.

Any promotion should be as it is..........as it is used in it's daily buisiness, to show where the money gets spent on, not fancy liveries and commercial type PR

I just hope that while they are trying to present a face the public would like to see they don't forget what they are really there for.

Yes, since when have the government (any government, not just the current lot) listened to what the public want!

And I have to admit to having been an aircraft spotter - still am if I find myself at an airport. It's a reminder of what I've seen and when. But never an anorak. I certainly would not fly to Vegas just for the air show. Indeed the one time I happened to be passing through when the Nellis open day was on, there was no accommodation to be found, so we just carried on to the next town and gave the airshow and Vegas a miss :o

Like DaveB, I have taken thousands of photos and similarly they were for my own use. Some of you will have seen a few on here to illustrate a thread, but that is the extent of my web exposure. And I recall Leif's comments on the anoraks at Nellis before. My sympathies are with you and Tag. And I'm annoyed that these idiots create a bad impression. If I want a clear shot, I'll wait for the moment - if it doesn't come, just move on. Clearly the "hobby" has become an obsession. Ironically if they just wanted a reference photo they could wait the few days before it became available on A.Net. But being first on there seems to be driving the obsession.

There is a big difference between an anorak spotter and someone like yourself and me for that matter that recorded the movement as a record of aviation for the future and for a love of it......history as it happened

I used to record movements of common aeroplanes and now looking back it's fascinating.

The anorak only want what's 'new' and will even go to LHR in the middle of the night to see the latest BA get delivered so they can boast that they saw it first..I know that for fact in the early nineties with BA 737-400

Most of the early aviation records were by enthusiasts as little real official recording as we know it was made or kept.

I could write a book on the idiocy I have come across over the years but I am sure the readers of this forum know exactly what I mean.

As you you Ian.....you have provided me with useful information many times simply because you were there and took the trouble to note it mentally or written down, all those years ago.

I bet the anoraks can't remember what they saw last week because they are not really interestd in aviation as such

wasnt the hawk and tincan painted in those colours for the RAF's 90th bday? I personally dont see no reason not to do it, as its for display, celbratory or other reasons as they sometimes look nice, funky or to illustrate the squadron... Like the 56 Sqn's Firebird... But dont also forget that it add variety to the crouds... Its all well having 5 tonkas but when they are the same colours, and markings its a "seen one, youve seen them all"...
