Charlie -- Just a thought - do you think he was trying to use aerodynamic braking or just lost it on the pitch up??

I'm not entirely sure. I'm not sure he was either. Looking at the apparent attitude though, and the time held, he must've been. Quite how effective it would be is another matter for someone with a better aviation brain than me.

Tonks?

I got used to watching the Georgia Air Guard F15s do it at Dobbins ARB in Mariette Ga -- they would make it a game to see who could keep the nosewheel off the longest -- I was wondering if the IL62 drivers logic was presenting the greatest area to make the most drag - which ever it obviously worked some as the aircraft is still there and sitting on its gear

Well with my very much NON pilot eyes it looked to me like he was deliberatly pulling back to cause drag, but I may be wrong.

Just how much drag a wing at high angle of attack makes is quite astonishing. Try raising the nose in a light aircraft before you have reached flying speed and watch how your aeroplane stops accelerating.
Quite a few people have been caught out by that, they are stuck in ground effect and unable to climb out or gain airspeed until they hit the perimeter fence!

One thisng to remeber about the IL-62 is it is a bit tail heavy on the ground which is why it somethimes uses a wheeled tailprop

This may have exaggerated the effect somewhat
