BOAC beauty

Post by VEGAS »

Hi all,

with the release of Service pack 1 for the A2A Stratocruiser, I thought I'd take her in her shiny new colours from Southampton to Edinburgh for a little test flight. As always its busy as ever in the flightdeck with little or no time to sit back as there's always something to check or inspect. The flight left me exhausted!

Hope you enjoy the shots! What a beautiful aircraft to fly and operate. Highly recommended.

Wait till you have the first engine fire - or maybe it's not that realistic!

Great shots Eddie.I don't have FSX but if I did this would be the first add on that I would buy.BTW I seem to recall that the B377 had an unfortunate habit a throwing a prop when in flight as a result of which it had a reputation of being the best 3 engined airliner on the Atlantic run!Bet Garry can clarify that.Best Wishes EricT.

It's true that many flights ended with only three engines in working order. With 28 cylinders per engine there was a lot of stuff that could go wrong and often did. I think the prop throwing habit was also one of the reasons for the armour plating fitted to the fuselage in line with the props.

With a dual ignition system that would mean 28 x 4 x 2 = 224 spark plugs! How would you fancy setting the plug gaps on that little lot! If you allowed 2 minutes per plug to remove, gap and replace that would mean a full shift for 1 man just to check the plugs! :o

Hi Tako. Those P&W Wasp Majors must have been incredible pieces of engineering!I seem to recall that some piston engines had triple ignition systems.Don' t know if I am correct or not.Garry? :dunno: EricT

Just goes to show how simple a jet engine is!
