Unusual visitor to Manchester yesterday
Hi all,
Been reading ringway reports and noticed this little fella popped in for a visit on Friday.

Just curious, does anyone know why such a visit occurs? I have often wondered why civilian airports get such visits from RAF machines.
Naturally with some of the larger RAF transport aircraft I assume weather at destination can be a contributing factor.
Not that I'm complaining of course as its always nice to see different aircraft pop in from time to time. But I have never actually established the reasons for such a visit.

Could be a variety of reasons, practice diversion, actual diversion due to weather, some form of minor emergency leading to a precautionary landing, pre-arranged visit to familiarise ATC/Emergency services with the Hawk etc. etc. All airfields should have a diversion field nominated in case weather goes below minima or something else blacks the runway, I remember being at Shawbury when about 6 Hawks all diverted there because Valley had fogged out, not unsurprising being where it is!

Here in the states, it's not unusual to see pilots on solo cross-countries at various pre-approved civilian airfields. Abilene & Midland in Texas are good examples of such locations (while Dyess is right across town from KABI, they restrict outside training flights there due to the C-130 and B-1B training operations already going on there). We'll see the occasional T-6A Texan II or T-1A Jayhawk here at Dallas Love Field as well.

Sometimes you get a few Hawks into Liverpool doing touch and go's.

Hi all,
I have always wondered this but what is the role 100 Sqn what do they do with the Hawks? I know 208 Sqn trains the pilots onto Fast jets ,19 Sqn is weapons and navigator training. Or is the role of 100 sqn training air combat training ?
Manston gets RAF , RN & army Machines but they come in for fuel
Could that be the same reason here?
James

100 Sqn are sort of an Aggressor squadron equivalent, they also train FAC (Forward Air Controllers) and Fast Jet Navs, 19 Sqn doing all the Pilot combat training hopefully the Pilots have figured out the navigation thing by that stage!
