Hawker Siddeley 748 and FSX

Post by TrafficPilot »

Had a quickie search but couldn't find an answer so thought I'd post and ask here..

Finally bit the bullet and installed FSX on my new "super computer". However am sorely missing some of my favourite add-ons - notably the HS748, Trident and BAC 1-11 from your wonderful site.

Do these addons work OK in FSX? I guess I'd have to install to a temporary folder then move into FSX.

Also can I download them from AVSIM or a similar site?

Thanks

Adam

Hi Adam,

DM's stuff (Trident, VC10 etc) work well in FSX with the usual caveats. Do you know how to install aircraft manually?

The 748 works fine also.

DM's stuff can only be found at his site... www.dmflightsim.co.uk Don't download from anywhere else as it won't be current.

The 748 is at Avsim etc, but as far as I know the Andover (HS780) is only here.... http://www.cbfsim.org/cbfsim/cbfsBB/vie ... =13&t=7744

Any problems let us know.

Hi Ben

Thanks for the quick response!

Yes installed ok. Only problem I can see at the moment is a non-moving artificial horizon and the comms panel doesn't appear to work (ie it doesn't light up with adf/vhf frequencies). However I've only been testing for 20-30 mins while browsing the manual again so I''ll spend some more time playing with settings later tonight.

Thanks again

Adam

All appears to be working now:)

Just needed to load a "complex aircraft" safe defauit flight before switching to the 748.

Fantastic aeroplane! Wish I could find a real one to fly..

Thanks

Hi Adam

Sri I missed you earlier but welcome to the forum and glad you're sorted ;-) The old 'save a flight with default aircraft' cures 99.9% of all known problems ;-)

Hi DaveB

Thanks:) Have been here a few years back but lost my login info so this is my new one.

Only just got back into FSX - have been flying the real things (Cessna 172 not 748 sadly) from Kidlington since March so not much time to enjoy the sim:(

Does the 748 model engine failure? My port engine has just spooled down at 19000 ft over the Norwegian coastline. Ooops.

Maybe I overheated the engine!?

Sounds like fuel icing, if the OAT is below -20 degrees C ensure you have the fuel heaters on, I was caught out by this also on one of my early flights. This was quite disconcerting as both of the engines spooled down simultaneously.

Yes my friend.. the 748 DOES simulate engine failure though to be honest.. I'm not sure how well this works in FSX. It certainly works in FS9 if you don't follow 'basic' procedures ;-) Rule of thumb.. if you expect the OAT to drop below +5deg.. then anticipate some sort of deice intervention. This can be in the form of engine deice or fuel heaters (which I usually put on as a matter of course) :) Thrape the engines above and beyond max take-off settings and you will rubbish them. When at continuous RoC and clean.. reduce rpm to around 14000-14200 then climb and cruise at this setting ;-) I wish I could be sure the intuitive checklist worked in FSX but the honest answer is I don't know as I still remain in the dark ages (FS9) even though I have FSX installed. The checklist obviously helps but in it's absence.. print out the manual and fly with that. You should stay out of trouble ;-)

This aircraft is one of my all time faves - I was just saying so a couple of days ago on the Air Hauler forum HERE.

It's one of the best aircraft I've flown in FS - and I had the opportunity for a ride-along in one at Wildenrath (doing engine failure excercises - happily just the one... ) and it was fantastic.

I learned the hard way, too - even though I have the manual in front of me when I fly it, on a haul from Iceland to Glasgow, just a short distance from the destination, at +/- 20,000ft over the Trossachs the thing just plummeted to earth! :dunno:

Control surface icing :$

It won't happen again.

Thanks Rick! :welldone: :prayer:

JD

PS: I forgot to mention - Adam , make sure you read the read me files in Dave's aircraft as there are instructions for adjusting the engine smoke to suit FSX ;-)

A good rule of thumb with using the 748 in FSX is once the sim has loaded, use Shift-A to go to the 2D panel, then use A to go back to the VC. This forces the VC to work for some reason. I noticed it when I too couldn't see any radio frequencies and the AH was stuck. Works a treat and only needs doing on initial start. This is a good fix for other FS9 VCs that don't work fully in FSX.

And yes, the engine failures still work in FSX. I had to divert into Calais from 20,000' when fuel froze in one side... Down to one engine, it was exciting.
