Winter Weather...

I was at Churchill yesterday, in Canada, on the edge of Hudson Bay...The temperature on the ground was -29C and I was contrailing while taxying in...I wondered if either of these things are abnormal for this time of the year in that region? :flying:

My.. that is cold :o I got an email off Robbie on Boxing Day and it was -16 with 2ft of snow around Montreal.. quite mild compared to what you've seen but a lot can happen in a week

It must be frigid in Canada - yesterday our winds were around 35mph gusting to 50mph from the NW and the temps dropped to -6C. Factor in the wind chill and it was bl**dy cold!

We don't mind that Canadian air in the summer but in winter, I wish they would keep it up there. ;-)

nice weather for penguins over here. first job of the day yesterday was an aerial cable drop from telegraph pole to house. bright sunshine but.
-18 c with a wind chill of -28c. after half an hour back to the truck to rewarm and back out to finish. winter has not realy got going yet. still it's better than the +30's c with a humidex of +40c in the summer.

It's been down in the -20s all week, yet was +9 on boxing day. Most of the snow came before Christmas is down to about 4 feet at the moment, much earlier than in previous years (well in the 11 years I've been here near Montreal anyway), we had 12 feet by the end of last winter. It's the wind that gets you, on a calm day very low temperatures don't bother you, especially if there's some sunshine, but with the wind it cuts through your flesh like a knife, any exposed flesh burns, the little hairs in your nostrils become rigid and tickle and when you reach the warmth of a building your legs tingle as the blood flow returns. :flying:

Here's a tip for any squaddies out there in it. If you have to go in a warm tent or building, leave your weapon outside. Condensation will form on the working parts and then freeze when you go outside again and that is just asking for a stoppage.
