Photo Catalog Software

The next question.....

Does anyone know of any reasonable photo catalog software? Free would be good of course :roll:

I'm after something which can use multiple keywords & can export the results (either into a fresh directory or into some kind of archive).

It's for a load of photos of the Camel Trophy events, mostly pictures of Land Rovers & taken it lots of different locations over a number of years. I'd like to be able to sort them and be able to pull out relevant photos. For example, I might search for '+freelander +south +african' and be able to export all pictures which are tagged with those words.

Yes, I know, google is your friend etc. But, there are hundreds of different packages available and its quite a long & tedious process, given the cr@p connection here, to try them so I was hoping for a recommendation from someone.

Yeh.. I know exactly what you mean with Google. While it undoubtedly has it's uses, I often find that the one thing I'm looking for isn't there or.. there are so many variations on the theme, I immediately lose the will to continue

I don't know what it's like as I've never accepted the install but Adobe Reader has a freebie photo gallery software that can be downloaded at the same time. It's free but it might be 'bloatware' as is Reader itself I generally use Foxit Reader most of the time as it's only a tiny percentage of the size of the Adobe version and does exactly the same

so your looking for a program that will allow you to name all the photos in a folder the same name with 1 , 2 , 3, added to each one?

Me I just have a photographs folder on a drive
and name the folders to discribe whats in it
ie , motor sports , aircraft, KLNA (my little home airport hangout)
then since most pics will be "snap shots with only a few really good ones
I''l just name the important ones for posting , maybe even create another folder in the one I"m editing
that way as time progresses I have all the pics of , say, KLNA in a folder with all the sub folders being dated

so when I want to see them or share or burn them to disk, whatever I can easily find them.

one thing about those programs , If I remember is if you store the pics in the programs album folder
it can take awhile to start the program as it's loading all the photos........

Sadly not. I need to be able to add multiple searchable keywords to each picture.

To add a CBFS connection...... Lets say I have lots of pictures of VC-10s, Tridents & 1-11s. There are pictures that show dozens of different examples of each type, taken in different locations. Some show several of the same type, some show multiple types. Some also show people. I want the ability to search for, say, all pictures with keywords EastAfricanAirways & vc-10, or all pictures with both a VC-10 & a 1-11. etc.

One of the very reasons why I loose the will trying to find something suitable!! Spend ages downloading something just to find that it's not what it appeared to be.

Not yet.... will have a look at that.... IIRC it also bypasses the IT gestapo at work who, would you believe, even block the ability to change the windows background.

I'm giving http://www.collectorz.com/photo/features.php a try at the moment, it seems to do just what I need. It was also a good price..... the best sort of price in fact.....

I always thought that Iraqi 737 was a far smarter looking machine than one with engines

I use Adobe Lightroom and could not recommend it too highly. Just brilliant. Not free, of course, but well worth the price tag with it's comprehensive toolset, archiving and tagging utilities, etc. It obviously depends on your needs whether you would want to spend money on it though. (ie: whether you're an enthusiast/pro/just have millions of pictures) It's about £200.

Not sure of many decent freeware ones except Windows explorer.

But we use at work a program called Microsoft Expressions (used to be called iview), its fantastic at keywording. You might be able to download a freeware version. Other than that as has been said, Adobe Lightroom has a fairly good cataloge mode. Usefull when you have a folder with 10,000 Plus photographs in!
