ACM Wilfrid Freeman

Post by VC10 »

I've just finished a biography about ACM Sir Wilfrid Freeman, as the books sub-title states " The genius behind allied survival & air supremacy 1939 to 1945".

I'm embarrassed to say I had never heard of him until a friend lent me the book. It would seem he was the saviour of the Mosquito & the Mustang. I particularly like the story where the Air Staff wanted the Mosquito fitted with a turret or two for self defence. Freeman's retort was - you believe it will fly so slowly in its clean form that it will need to be able to protect itself, so you are going to make it even slower by sticking turrets on in it.

God knows what the outcome of the war would have been if Freemen hadn't opposed Beaverbrook's ideas at the Ministry of Aircraft Production.

A very informative book, certainly worth a read.

If God had meant us to fly, he would have given us tickets.
