Too Much Choice

Post by tonymadge »

You know today I fired up FS for a bit of testing and as I sat there I thought now what will I fly today....
Well I dropped down my list of planes in the hanger and realised I need to live to 150 to fly them all, maybe 250 if I wanted to fly them correctly!!
I have gigabytes of them and even more in a folder called unused aircraft...
I guess I am not alone and envy those with self control that have just the ones they love to fly sitting there, I assume their aircraft menu loads in an instant not the age mine takes :)
Just a few years ago we would have never have dreamed of so much choice, it all started in FS98 when they came in abundance, now with FS9 and FSX the realism is an essential item, we delete those that in FS98 days we would have been proud to have, as we strive to have more and more realism. I can sit there looking through my list then suddenly relaise I have lost a lot of flying time just in choosing my steed for the day :o
But I guess I am not alone ;-)

Spot-on Tony. It's soooo simple to get even free, high quality add-ons that the minute or two it takes to install is nothing.
I suppose I'm not too bad - maybe twenty or so aircraft installed over the defaults, but, even then, it is rare for me to fly more than one or two a week.

I've more sitting waiting to go in, but again, sometimes you think 'why bother' when you can't reasonably use what's already in there!

Just did a quick count up: FS9 700 aircraft, FSX 280 aircraft and these numbers don't include the individual airframes, for example I have the IRIS F3 has 110 paint jobs.

I'm afraid that I am guilty of flight testing a new download then, if it is ok, doing a couple of trips and then filing and forgetting until now. At 95GB (fs9) and 76GB(FSX) it looks like a cull is due although the HD is fairly large (750GB) :)

In order to keep FS startup times as low as possible 'and' to keep clawing back disc space on the FS drive, I keep the vast majority of my FS aircraft in a folder on another drive. My list of FS aircraft is now reasonably sparse with a handful of oddments I keep for poodling around plus the ones I fly regularly which keeps the aircraft folder down from a possible 59gb to a more manageable 21gb. As the FS9 drive on the pc I use regularly is only a smidge over 70gb.. you can see why I need to remain chosey with installed aircraft! :o

Just checked and I appear to have close to 500 aircraft in FS9. Some of those are AI only, but not that many. When I first installed FS9, I told myself I would set a limit of 3 repaints per aircraft. Well, with all the very excellent repaints available, mostly from people on this site, that rule went out the window ages ago. I suppose I should do a cull but being a pack rat, I find starting that job very hard to do - I mean I never know when I might want to fly one of them.

Paints are what do it for me too. There are many of us who fly for our VA who like to fly the 'Correct' paint/registration with the 'Correct' flight/aircraft. A quick glance at just 2 aircraft shows 63 paints in my Rapide folder and 83 in my Vanguard folder and the majority of the aircraft I fly on the VA are so filled :o The Viking.. a paint for every registration (42).. Herald likewise (24).. same with the Lancastrian (16), the York (24), the Halton (15) and on it goes. I dare not look in my Viscount folders

1 A/C and 1 livery here.

Drop-down loads pretty fast,

Choise is fairly simple.

Do not need to live to see 250 ;-)

No Dan.. just predictable ;-) You fly one type and one particular airframe so a 1:1 ratio is all you need :D
