Re: Flight tutorials - Vanguard and/or Viscount

Post by BAW9DV »

Hi there,

I'm another newbie to this forum. I'm currently the Training Captain on the 747-400 for the virtual airline, British Airways Virtual. Having been around for nearly 10 years, we have just launched our latest incarnation of the VA with a new website, schedule system and in-house monitoring software.

As part of our new look, we are embracing some of the Classic fleet operations of BEA and BOAC, using data from some of the actual schedules available when these aircraft flew.

Whilst my current fair is the PMDG Boeing 747-400 Passenger and 747 Freighter aircraft, I really want to try to get to grips with flying one of these early wonders of the sky.

I have downloaded and installed Rick Piper's Vickers Vanguard along with the recommended new sound set and new panel he talks about on his website. I understand much of the manual and have the checklist, but try as I might I simply cannot seem to get even one engine started! I'm fully aware of the requirement to have a decent air and electrical supply to allow a succesfull start, but even with the manual contents, it actually does not show how to start the engines. A tutorial would be really nice - but I have searched hgh and low and cannot find one. I also cannot find any posts about this on your forum search capability.

After some more research, it seems that much of our Classic schedule may well feature the Vickers Viscount more so than the Vanguard and I'm willing to have a go at this too. Is there a tutorial available that would outline a step-by-step process to actually get started and running?

I have been test-flying the 747 in its various guises and models since the days of FS5.1 and understand much of the systems. I cannot believe that the lovely passenger prop like this is defeating me ! :doho:

Any suggestions or help and advice would be welcomed. I have yet to download and install the Viscount - perhaps that is the better option, I'm not sure.

Thanks for listening - nice to be here!

Kind regards,

Lee

Hi Lee,

Ricks Website is very out of date an he hasn't been able to do anything with it since it got hacked a few years back. Best to download our VA aircraft pack from here... http://www.cbfsim.org/cbfsim/cbfsBB/viewforum.php?f=13 Its the one titled VA Vangaurd pack. I'd delete whatever bits you installed from Ricks site as these will be out of date. Also worth mentioning that any queries RE any of the VA packs should be posted here and not directly to Rick as he is busy with other stuff at the moment.

All the best,
Ben.:tunes:

Ben,

Thanks for the updated information. Will install the new packs and have another go. Interesting to see Peter McLeland's data as well - very useful!

I had not planned to bother Rick - his website makes it quite clear that he is busy (or was) and so contacting him was not really on my list of things to do.

However, I discovered this place by Google search and its good to be here. I'll keep you posted!

by all means have a look at our new siste if you wish:-

Take care,

Looks like you are going the right way with the props

I looked at you site......I was surprise there was no VC 10 and the Trident on the fleet page looks back to front

Hi Garry,
Welcome aboard
Cheers for that - good to be hear!

The new BAV site has only been live for 2 days, as has the pilot monitoring software developed for our use. Some of the staff and Board have been awake nealry 50 hours working to get the site ready to go live and provide support as the problems come in (much fewer than we expected I'm glad to say).

The Fleet page WILL get done but it is not at the top of the list now. I believe that the Development Team will begin work on it next week. But watch out tho - our forum is very active and someone has let the cat out of the bag about this great place of yours! You might find a number of our pilots heading this way!

Take care,

Hi,

Well, I'm another newie. I've been lurking here for ages, but this post really caught my interest. I was going to join BAV a couple of years ago, but then I found this place and the wonderful classic aircraft which I have been flying ever since. I felt that if I joined BAV I wouldn't get a chance to fly classics, but now I am very happy to find out that this will soon change. I presume the BAV schedules will include Trident and VC10 flights?

Thanks to all for an excellent and interesting forum.

Welcome aboard CH

Well mate.. if BAV don't include the Trident and VC10, you could always consider joining CBFSVA. 99.9% of our routes are authentic and cover from the 30's to the early 80's with the correct aircraft to match ;-)

Hmm... I may just take you up on that, Dave.
I remember another reason that I didn't join BAV was their 30 day Pilot Inactivity Policy. I work abroad regularly, and although I pack my FS joystick along with my toothbrush, I can't guarantee getting a good (or any) network connection at some of the places I visit.
I see that CBFSVA has no such restriction, so expect my application soon. As soon as I get the internet connection in the staff flat fixed, that is...

Hi CH

RGr on that ;-) We operate very few restrictions in reality and our policy is fly when you can and when you want to :) The major thing we point out to pilots is for them to make sure they login to FSA at least once every 90 days as failure to do so may have them removed. This is nowt to do with us.. it's the host software doing it's best not to get bogged down with inactive pilots. The good thing is.. you don't have to fly. Just login every 90 days and you remain active ;-)
