I had a book out of my local library years ago, I might be mistaken, but I think i t may have been by Yakima Kanut (not sure of spelling) the great film stuntman & horse wranger. He mentions the Paul Mantz crash, but I think he said there were two versions of the aircraft & the one shown in this clip, crashed before the 'other' aircraft had filmed its scenes for use in the film.
I suppose as every stunt performer knows/acknowledges, when pushing the envelope things can/do sometimes sadly end in loss of life, even with the best of preparation
