hi guys
this is my first post but have been a member for a year,in new zealands dominion post paper i noticed a picture of a lanc on the front page yesterday which got my attention pretty quick.Turns out it was a mock up and pretty good one at that that is been used for the filming of the dambusters movie by peter jackson.Last night on the tv news confirmed that filming had started here in nz and locals at the hood airfield were complaining that they couldnt get onto the carpark as security was blocking them out.Others were complaining about the sound of gunfire etc.So hopefully we might get to see the movie in the not to distant future

In all seriousness though it would be nice to enjoy a thread about the possibilities of the film without it devolving into a discussion about the dogs name.

I think it's got a lot of promise. I'm not a fan of Peter Jackson but hopefully with Stephen Fry penning the script and a newcomer directing rather than Jackson himself it should prove to be a winner.

Why don't they just forget about giving the damned dog a name and instead use the 'here boy' or c'mon boy and good boy' commands, I'm sure that Gibson would have used these terms at some stage and it would not provoke outcry that the film is not historically acurate.

There, problem solved once and for all. Well.....apart from the credits.....Spot played by......Nigger!! :roll:

As much as I'd love that to be the case I'm afraid it's going to cause controversy one way or another. There are three points of view one can adopt in this argument. That nigger isn't being used because it's "political correctness gone mad" "pandering to the left wing hippies", and on the other side of things there are those who are adamant that there is no way in hell that nigger can be used even in a historical context for fear of offending people.

Sat neatly in the middle is the sensible point of view that appears to be adopted by people here that the team making the film will take flak (no pun intended) no matter which option they choose and there are pro's and con's on both sides of the debate. For one I can see why nigger should be used if they are portraying things accurately, but then I can also accept that it is now one of the most hate filled words in existence thanks to modern history and it is much more loaded than it may have been in the past.

I've no doubt that they'll do exactly what you describe and just use a roundabout way of talking about both the dog and the code-word and I for one will enjoy the film regardless of what they do, but I swear to the gods I'm going to personally visit each person who comes back from seeing who comments that "nigger" wasn't used in the film and punch them in face because this attitude that it simply must be used because of the supposed Daily Mail-esque sentiment that everything is "political correctness gone mad" is really annoying me.

Incidentally I'm fully aware that I'm looking like a total hypocrite based on what I said earlier in the thread.
