Vimy on the move!

Post by DaveB »

Hi Chaps..

This is probably a bit late for most but the Vimy was due to leave Ireland this morning at 0900 to arrive at Fairoaks between 1200-1300.. weather permitting. It's raining cats and dogs here at the mo so it may not be happening  Plan is for a takeoff from Fairoaks late afternoon back to Duxford ;-) If it does happen and you hear something rather odd in the skies.. look up as the Vimy doesn't have a great deal of flying life left :flying:

I read the other day Dave that it will be grounded in October when it flies into Brooklands using a grass runway

Know anything???? :worried:

Hello Mate..

Yes.. I've heard similar. No idea where the grass runway is though :dunno: There IS a portion of green stuff at Mercedes World that received mucho speculation.. will they or won't they.. and as far as I'm aware, they didn't. I gather the main building at Mercedes causes a fair whack of turbulence which is why the idea was shelved. Dunno though.. no idea what sort of run the Vimy needs.. anything is possible :)

They didn't have brakes in those days as speeds were low and they slowed down well on the grass. I suppose with a stiff wind it could almost be verticle  but the problem will always be stability on the point of touchdown no matter what the groundspeed. :worried:

When I read it I had the impression it was more of a publicity stunt. Having got the Varsity, Viscount, Jetstream and Concorde there in bits and fully reassembled I doubt the Vimy would present much of a challenge.

Rumour is that it was seen heading north in the Wycombe area about 17:30. The pilot must have knackers the size of space hoppers considering the CB activity this afternoon :o

Cheers

Rich

*Edit* - it did make it to Fairoaks, and it was later seen near Stevenage too, so its a fair bet its tucked up in bed at Duxford tonight

Tks for that Rich

I got the info from my team leader at Brooklands (he lives near Farnborough) and he'd seen nothing but blue skies and sunshine at a time when we'd already had two good downpours here in Berkshire. :o

Glad they appear to have made it back. ;-) An open cockpit at those speeds in rough weather can't be a great deal of fun :-(

Yes mate. It's also a good reason to have a captain and first officer. The first officer is perfectly qualified to get wet
