Virtual Dub Question

Used Virtual Dub successfully a number of times however, after having re-installed everything after formatting my hard drive I recorded a 30 second clip from FS then started Virtual Dub, when it came to compression that is where I started having problems that did not occur prior to re-formatting.



If I select Microsoft Video 1 after it has compressed the file ends up as 2GB!! :o

Equally, if I use Cinepak Codeec for Radus it then takes 30 minutes to compress.

The other selections also come up with Format Restrictions so only really have the option of the 2 listed above.

I seem to have lost some Codecs this time, can any-one please advise as cannot think why I do not have the selections in the menu bar that I previously had.

BTW have downloaded Codecs from MS Site but that has not helped any.

Nige.. the misspelt header/subject has been doing my head in since day one so I've edited Virual to read Virtual. It now looks more like something computer related rather than something you'd go to the doctor to get rid of ;-)

Download and install the k-lite mega codec pack from here and that will install codec for pretty much everything.... or you could just use windows movie maker which will work fine. ;-)

Many thanks Ben, the only reason I use Virtual Dub is so that I can I can use the cropping facility which unfortunately is not available with Windows Movie Maker.......or is it? :think:

I agree on Vdub... I find WMM a lot harder to use, which doesn't apparently make any sense..... :roll:

Have downloaded the Codecs Ben, many thanks.

Went to try Virtual Dub once again then after selecting Intel Codec (as others are the same as before) when the vid was processed it came out as 1.96Gb!! :o

On going through Windows Movie Maker without processing through VDub the file ended up as a completed vid of 10.7Mb, as you can see there is a huge difference. If this is now my only way the videos will compress to an acceptable size then I am no longer able to crop the videos which I need to do!

Just don't understand why VDub no longer does what it used to do!! :think:

Hi,

I've wrestled with VDub in the same way for some time - I thought it was just me !!

I found that originally the Win Media Player 9 codecs installed and ran well allowing the VDub crop feature to be used and giving good video compression and conversion time. I then dropped the file into Movie Maker for ease of playing.

Conversion to Media Player 10 wrecked everything as the v9 codecs don't work and I can't see a v10 set anywhere. I've also tried the recommended the Klite codec set with no improvement.

I like VDub for its tools and a "clean" compressed product since Movie Maker has lesser tools and always seem to make the image darker and more grainy.

Anyone who can find the answer will be greatly praised !!

I'm pretty sure you can still install the WM9 codecs with later versions of WMP. I don't make movies that often so WMM is fine for me. Could you not create the video in VDub and then edit that video in movie maker to get the compression?

Hi Ben,

After using Fraps to capture the video I then move to V Dub to compress and crop however, when importing the file after V Dub has done its' job it then became unplayable in the sense that it was like watching a time lapse video with movement every three or four seconds......to put it into one word V Dub is now cr*p to use. :-(
