Another landmark blown up!

Post by thehappyotter »

Those of you who use the M1 between J26-J27 will be familiar with the Watnall Brickworks chimneys which stand at Watnall in Nottinghamshire. For me they have always been a sign that i'm nearly home.

Following the land being put up for sale and the council having the need to build more houses they have all of a sudden been declared unsafe and this evening were demolished... (me, cynic, no...)

Being the ever nosey person I am I blagged myself access to a bridge over the M1 to watch them being demolised. Despite loosing a landmark and part of our local heritage you've got to admit that explosions are pretty cool!!

Shame about the trees being in the way but it was as close as I could get.

Hi Rob

yaeh what a bummer progress can be , And sometimes it's not always for the better,
Here in my town there was a Farmers Market that had been around forever, a swap meet
and shops selling all sorts of new items , some nice SS cooking pots I have came from there.
It's gone now , the land bought up by a developer who was going to build a small housing development.
which has been put on hold til who knows when because of the bust.
A landmark , maybe not in that sence the powers that be would want
but most anyone in the area, would know exactly what part of town you
were talking about if you said The Farmers Market, ... Now it's a dirt lot, and it doesn't seam to draw weeds these days.

barren ... now thats progress....... I still look that way when I pass by, just to see if any weeds have taken root.

good seeing ya
Joe
