Brooklands - Sun 16th Aug 09

Post by DaveB »

Hi Guy's..

I don't have any info on the event other than what I've posted below and this is a begging letter for stewards! :worried:
Finally, a reminder about next weekend, particularly the Sunday (16th). This is the day of the Scalextric attempt to set a new world record for the longest Scalextric track. It is being filmed as part of James May’s BBC2 series “James Mays Toy Stories” They are reconstructing the whole of the original track and running a Scalextric race along the entire length of the original 2.75 mile Outer Circuit, using the remaining track and tracing where the track used to go. It will start on the Banking at 4pm and finish when a car manages to get round the whole lap, whatever time that may be! The Museum site will stay open until the lap is completed, although all the exhibits will close at 5pm.
I presume James May will be there at some point and you might get yourself on TV :)

I would like to have gone to that, I have a lot of time for Mr May, more so than the other two from Top Gear.

2.75 miles of Scalextric track? Are they mad? When I was younger we put three sets together to make a super size track... We spent all afternoon afterwards trying to get the dead sections live. Never got one lap out of it.

LOL... And if they finally get it all working, can you imagine having to traipse 1 and a half miles to put the car back on when it invariably spins off at the farthest corner? ;) ;)

Seriously, all luck to their elbows with this one, I'm looking forward to seeing it on telly... Eventually.

Then after you've traipsed one and a half miles you have try and get it from under the sideboard.

Hi Guy's..

I don't know if any of you went to Brooklands yesterday but I've just received this news..
At 7.15pm yesterday, the second Scalextric car completed a lap of the Scalextric Brooklands track (2.75 miles) to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest Scalextric track. The whole attempt was being filmed for James May’s ‘Toy Stories’ which will be shown on BBC2 later this year.

Hiya HC

I've not seen anything else.. perhaps I'll learn something tomorrow. I gather they had tiny camera cars following the 2 main cars round the track and one of them blew up :o  Wish I could've been there too mate but sadly, I was working though nothing as mundane as flying  I like James May so will keep an eye open for the series when it starts ;-)

EDIT..
I've had a look on YouTube and while there are a couple of snippets.. there's nothing worth looking at to be honest :-(

EDIT#2..
Have been sent a link to a rather more professional bit of film taken on Sunday. It's 4m23s and while still somewhat boring, it's vastly better than the others  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1iyIxFvPEI
