Hi Jelle :)

Rgr that ;-) I can only go by what I'm told and this often turns from a short story to urban myth/legend in short order  Imagine how the story will be told in another 10 years time :o We don't have such finery on EP as the entire system is mandraulic (not the flaps of course which are dropped regularly) ;-)

Sorry to bump an old post but I'm thinking of visiting Brooklands for the first time tomorrow with my wife and son in tow! Is Wednesday still a good day to visit as per the comments further up this thread? I'd love to get a good look around the 1-11, Viscount and VC-10 in particular...

Thanks :)

And what's wrong with a good look around the Vanguard Dom??

Yup.. nowt has changed regarding what's open and what's not. Wx forecast for tomorrow is excellent so I'll be out and about at Brooklands from around 10:30. Varsity will probably be closed but the rest should be okey doh. ;-)

Pop over to the Vanguard and say hello if you get a min

You'll need more than a min if they start telling yarns! Also, I hope the family are not too sensitive to colourful language. Perhaps they might want to sit that visit out in the cafe!

The VC10 crew, on the other hand, are far more refined - as one would expect

Y e s.. I suppose a 'min' was stretching it a bit. I can talk for that long without taking a breath

Tis true unfortunately. While the Queen of the Skies has a team of volunteers equal to her status.. the same can be said for the 'Tramp Steamer' end of the market which is where we are. On the Vanguard.. it's just like being at work but with aeroplanes. On the VC10.. it's more your stately home visit

Excellent, thanks gents - I shall be sure to pop over and say hello ;-)

And Dave, I only didn't mention the Vanguard because I don't know a great deal about them :$

I have learned a little more than I knew about them from reading Brian Trubshaw's book "Test Pilot", just starting the VC-10 chapter later this evening! So this could be the chance to vastly improve my knowledge of all things Vanguard

I'll try and persuade the missus to check out the curtains and upholstery in the 'stately home' while I'm busy too - she loves that stuff

Oh dear.. THAT will all change tomorrow  I promise that if I notice any of you dozing off.. I'll stop.. and pass you over to Albert who was a number cruncher at Vickers.. then a lecturer. If you get past him.. I'll buy you lunch

All jesting aside.. looking forward to meeting you tomorrow. It's always nice to put a face to a name ;-)

Dave,

It was great to meet you today and thanks for the insight into the workings of the Vanguard/Merchantman

I must say that Brooklands is a fantastic place to visit so I'll definitely be back. And my wife was so impressed with the 'stately home' (aka Sultan of Oman's VC-10) that she's agreed to come back too, so we became members :dancer:

My thanks to you and John and all the other volunteers who made it a really interesting day :)

Hello Mate

The pleasure was ours.. believe me ;-) Today wasn't a bad day all told. While we had a fair few visitors onboard, it rarely got to the point where there were masses of folk hanging around in the cabin waiting to get onto the flightdeck which was good. I hate being 'hurried on' and that.. thankfully didn't happen today :)

I'm pleased that you, your wife and son (he didn't say it was a minature version of Winston Churchill.. eg, very much a baby son) enjoyed your day AND that the VC10 finally reopened (see Ian.. even though she was the Queen of the Skies, the legacy of 'too much time off' still applies) ;-) It's always nice to 'sit in' something that still works (eat your heart out VC10, Viscount, Varsity, 1-11, Concorde e t c) and we'll continue to do our best to see that this situation doesn't change for a while yet ;-)

Chuffed to bits. Look forward to your next visit ;-)
