I somehow managed to mispell the name of the street I live on - it is Ashburn Street. Should have raised a little 'h'. Can I blame that on being in the Twilight Zone? Didn't think so. One of my favourite shows by the way. They don't make them like they used to make them and yes, I used to hate it when older people said that and now I do it all the time.

sometimes if we were trying to get out of class we would say we have a headache

Ah, good one! Yes, many will be fooled by that thinking Las Vegas is the capitol and that is not west of LA. But Carson City is!

Have you ever been to Nevada? Once you leave Las Vegas and travel a few miles, it is like being on Mars. This I know from personal experience!

yep, but the general assumption is that Nevada is east of California... so it pretty much stops there.

the QP and Biggy fries , I very very rarely every get more that the mcdouble and small fries
and thats limited. so I guess I don't get my up and comings....

As to the coins, I have no idea because there was a .20 piece in the 1800's but it has long been obsolete. The only other way to do it is to cheat a little. I give you 55 cents (50 cent piece and a nickel and you give me a quarterback) Hopefully, one that can get rid of the ball faster than Jason Campbell.

I thought my coin solution was at least creative - thinking outside the box. Yours reminds me of the old "if a plane crashes on the US-Canadian border, where do they bury the survivors" Ok, so I am a sore looser.

What really gets me is the way the Colonials pronounce UK towns ending in "ham" and counties ending in "shire". Not to mention the usual murder of Leicester and Edingburgh. The pronounciation of Norfolk is always interesting - looks like many of the Colonials are afraid of the ending sound for some reason. I don't know why, those living in Norfolk, VA usually pronounce it correctly with out even flinching.

Of course the Brits tend to sound every syllable in Connecticut where as here it is prounounced "Connedycut" Same applies to California. The Brits emphasize the "i", the Colonials say "Calfornia" with only a hint if the "i". Reminds me of a Colonial we met on the Queen Elizabeth on our way over here. We asked what state he was from and he told us "Merlin." Took us a second or two to figure out he meant Maryland. Many here call Las Vegas "Los Vegas" I notice the BBC always pronounces it the way it is spelt. I cringe every time I hear someone from Brooklyn talk about "Turd and Turdy-Turd street"

I will say I found it easier to understand the Colonials when I first came here then I did the Scots, Liverpudlians or Yorkshiremen back home. My mother was from Liverpool but spoke the Queen's English and would rebuke me severly if I ever dropped an "h" or committed some other linguistic sin, common to many Brits. She was my Professor Higgins, I suppose. At the time, I was not very amused. Bloody jumped -up Scouser!

But enough, bottom line is . . . whose language is it anyway.

In responce to who's language it is or from where it comes. It's my understanding English is a language that is of many tounges
west Germenic , from the Anglo Saxon , which their history comes from.. Romans..??
words from Latin French Dutch .. the Vikings had some influence ( by the way were is Dan KH?)
........... I'm not big on that factually.. and in fact see little benefit in knowing, and can really only see
some point in which a division can be started, not necesssarily between you and me. but, I'll take the pointers if offered ,
as for the language spoken in this country it did come from the guys that started it. Come to think of it
, this country was started by a bunch of guys , mostly of English or British origin who didn't want to pay taxes,
yet who before their end - set up a system to collect taxes.. if that makes any sence.

so see it's all your fault anyway!

What concerns me more is the push to speak another language.. Spanish, which I think is a huge mistake

My meanings is this , in a national emergency we have to publicly anounce the notice in English (broken as it may be)
and Spanish???... let alone everyday life. Well what about the French Creole the Germans and French Canadian
The Korean, Japaneese the Indian and Jew the Greek and those of Russia and all the rest
_what? Now they are expected to learn two languages when they come to be citizens of this country?...
besides that, there are many different dialects of Spanish so which do we choose? Puerto Rican?
they do fly the American flag down there.

Now before I say more . be it known* I have Spanish blood in me. My great grandparents came from Spain
moving to Texas, my grandmother, marrying a French Candian then moved to northern Indiana
once told my relatives who had come to visit us (my uncle Romaeo and aunt Yolanda)
not to speak Spanish in front of those that didn't speak the language. it's rude "We're Americans speak English". I know I know
( I remember it very distinctly,cause my ears got real prickly . like "grandmas a little ticked".. she was very gentle about it, but firm.)

My dads side -come from Germans and Scots ... so there you go... I am a person of many nations molded into one ,
.. and it helps me understand the plight of imigrants - everyone comes here for a better life. unfortunatly some
come and steal their way through, not pulling the line , getting what they can for themselves and leaving many harmed

the problem as I see it is, we seam to have moved from a melting pot ,to the salad bowl .
From a people meshing as one with a common goal, to a peoples divided by individualism.
it seams Proper English is the last on peoples agenda .. yet I firmly believe that to be most important , proper English
there is no faster route to a lack of communitation and understanding.and hatred , it's a pretty instictive reaction ..
.. the dislike of a peoples by what one misinterprets or simply doesn't understand....not all think that but it's there

well........ now this thread has gone a 180 from "which matters not - to what matters" the measure of this country
