For some strange reason I was fully expecting the words 'And it's go go go' as the flag dropped but......nuffin'...... not even ther're orft......!!
Note how close the photographers are to the track on the start of the race and after the big crash on the start/finish line the near misses that occurred due to no in-car radios!!
By jove Nigel I'd forgotten just how hairy it was in the 70s. I had the privilege of driving round Silverstone on Sunday in a friend's E type Jaguar, and had never realised just how difficult it is to sight the corners on what is a rather featureless track
So you've been ordered by your boss to "crash" Why not go round until you find a nice gravel trap or pile of tyres, then gently slide off into it?
Renault wanted Piquet to 'crash' his car so that the track would be littered with debris so as to bring out the safety car, Alonso had already made his stop and would not need to come in again, others would so Alonso was basically guaranteed to win. Had he sand pitted or gone off on a run-off area there is every likelyhood that no safety car would be needed consequently Alonso would not have been likely to win the race.
In my view Piquet should never ever be allowed to drive another racing car again.

I used to be an optimist but with age I am now a grumpy old pessimist.
To be honest, apart from hearing Rubens winning the odd race, and looking at the beeb website, my interest waned about 5 years ago. To be honest, none of the current drivers have any of the personality of past years. I followed F1 for many years (avidly) but there's not a single driver I would root for these days.

The late Mr Baxter does lend a very odd old school style to things nowadays. God knows what he'd think of the current state of the racing.
