All very good until I realised I was working with Treasure Trove as we liked to call him, he was known for for his keen eye and never let an opportunity pass him by, often he would be seen with only his legs sticking out of a skip as he relentlessly delved away for "little gems" as he called them. He once recovered some old builders plastic hats which he was going to give to his two kids for Christmas, "be champion once they ave been cleaned" Treasure was heard to say...
Well an uneventful hour passed by standing around the Wessex and eventually The Queen returned and left smiles all round.
It wasnt until someone asked Treasure where he had nipped off to whilst on guard, that the true facts were revealed. He had asked the pilot if he could look round and the pilot mistakenly thinking Treasure was interested in aviation gave him the tour. Whilst the pilot had his back turned Treasure sat in the back and opened a little box and there they were, the Queens Toffees all nicely wrapped. The temptation was too much and they were soon in his pocket!
I often wonder if on the way home the Queen reached for her favourite sweetie only to find the lot gone! I guess she would have said to Philip " those thieving barstewards from Brum have done it again"
