One day when my current S-reg Vectra Series 1 gives up, I think I'll be looking at another one. The reviews seem to indicate handling got better through the series but for me the important thing is relaxed motorway driving. I had a Mondeo before the Vectra (after several Cavaliers) and found the Mondeo wearing on a long journey. Maybe the new ones are better but I'm not going to take a chance.

Since my current Vectra is a 2.5 V6 petrol, I think the 2.2 petrol Series 3 would be my choice as a compromise between tax and power, although having driven small diesels as hire cars on holiday, I might consider a diesel Vectra but only after a long test drive. The diesel Toyata Yaris was very refined but the diesel Ford Fiesta sounded like a tractor - the first made me think about a diesel in the future, the second made me wonder all over again.

And all jokes aside, what about a Skoda? :worried: If you're looking for leather, the Skoda Superb seems to come with that. No idea what the second hand prices are like though. My father-in-law has one (he had an Octavia before) and seems impressed but he doesn't do much mileage. I have to admit an Octavia would be on my list as well as the Vectra.

Yes Dave, the electrics are a pain in the arse. But at least the AA / RAC man can play with it... unlike many of the VAG cars where all they will do is take you to the nearest main dealer. Hopefully the money will come through by the end of the week. In the mean time I'm getting a day pass on the metro tomorrow to go down to some of the main dealers and see if I can get a test drive in some of there NetworkQ type ones (not that I'll be buying one of those as they're a bit too price, but it will give me an idea what they're like to drive.)

Tony... Too much... never. Do you not have a sythe strapped to the stretcher? ;)

Wise words Ian.

If you asked me 10 years ago if I would ever buy a Skoda. Or even consider buying a Skoda. I would have creased up in fits of laughter.

Things change.

My current car is a Skoda Octavia vRS 2.0T

Like I said I do research.

The vRS is one of the best pound for pound hot hatches currently out there.

Same as a Golf GTi. Without silly badge snobbery premiums.

Goes like stink too. ;)

Cheers Ian,

Glad to hear you had a good experience with the 2.2 unit. Its essentially the same as in the series 1 car, but a bit more refined. I did look a the Octavia, I drove one once about 4 years ago and thought it was superb.... but, again, price / miles for your money you get better deals on the Vectra / Signum.

Diesel... had one once, Pugeot 205 1.9 deisel. It was a great car... but i hated it, and be aware of modern diesels that where made in the past few years. They all have this filter thing in the exhaust that traps the carbon particles and then burns them off when you do a long motorway drive, but in order for this to work properly, they rely (mostly) on the filter getting hot on a long run... if it doesn't get hot enough, it chokes the engine and its a chargable fix from the dealer. Nissan, Renault, Peugeot, Mercedes, Ford have all had problems with it... infact ford had to redesign the exhaust on their new mondeo so that the filter was closer to the engine so it would get hot enough. Personally I think if we we're ment to drive Diesels God would have made us all farmers... or bus drivers

To be fair to Skoda, VW threatened to move the builing of the latest Golf to the Skoda factory as their build quality was significantly better than that coming out of the German Golf plant.
