The Viscount was a real famous all new combination as the Turbo prop as a type of propulsion was new as well as the Dart and the airframe.

The Britannia used the Proteus which was designed for the Brabazon and the Princess which was why it was so difficult to adapt to the Britannia.

Well.. the Vanguard suffered as a consequence. Oh to be let down by Rolls Royce of all companies :D BEA had already advertised their timetables and fares and mucho egg on corporate face happened thereafter 8)

The CL-44 was given Tynes although it flew later than The Vanguard it was designed before the Vanguard flew.

The was a collection, eventually, of CL-44's undelivered awaiting service versions of the engine at the time the Vanguard was forging ahead on tests with the many failures.

In the case of the CL-44 the engines were a disaster from the beginning and on the first flight the vibration was so bad some things worked loose including two of the engines themselves.

The 44 and the TCA Vanguards were to have the Bristol Orion but when that was abandoned the Tyne became the only option.

The Lockheed Electra was also going to have Tynes.

One interesting point on the A400 is that the props on each wing turn in the opposite direction! Must be a headache aerodynamically and mechanically, although worth it for the benefits it brings.

The TP400 is a BIG engine:

Poor ole Snoopy :(

Didn't know about the props on the 400M *-)

Some light twins and the Jetstream 41 have counter rotating props.

That's what the C/R stands for in Twin Comanche 160 C/R :)

Aerodynamically it's a bonus, hence doing it! It's to do with prop wash over the tail surfaces, on twins where both rotate in the same direction losing the engine that provides wash over the tail surfaces is more serious than losing the other one as your minimum control speed is then much higher*.
Mechanically as long as you design the gear box properly it's not a problem, the DH Hornet did it by swapping an idler gear from one side of the gear box to the other, certainly simpler than the alternative plan of making left and right handed engines!

*It's the same reason you put rudders behind the prop on ships, the fluid flow is faster and as lift is proportional to velocity squared it's that much more effective.

Is it not also to assist during refueling opps on the A400M?

And it breezed into service with virtually no probs!!...Oh how advanced we were then.

Interestingly, the Avro Tudor used the well-proven famous Merlin engine, but the Plane was pretty much a failure, don't know what the exact problems were.

Can someone explain what the difficulties are of marrying a new airframe with a new engine?

It did indeed Chris, but BEA converted two Dakotas to Darts to gain experience with the Dart as no one had any idea how it would actually work in service. So it was assisted with other aircraft,RR converted Daks as well

The Viscount was unique for those days as when many aircraft nearly crashed on their first flight (Britannia) and some did (Hermes) the only problem with the Viscount was a faulty fuel flow guage......a truly great sucess story and not given the praise it deserves. :)
