Rolls Royce Dart

Post by Garry Russell »

Another thread had me thinking :-O ....yeah OK ..it doesn't happen often

I was thinking about how many types have flown with the RR Dart as there sole motive power *-)

I can think of seventeen...although that could be stretched to nineteen depending on opinion.

I can think of one that flew with a mixed set, one of which was a Dart .

Also three other types that were almost launched but abandoned at the last minuet....two original projects (lack of interest) and one conversion project (customer decided to buy Viscounts instead as they were suddely coming onto the used market in abundance)

Some of course are obvious

I'll add them here as we get them..... :worried:

Sole......including test and research

Lancaster (test Bed)

I THINK they used the AMbassador as a test bed as well -- Same one that sported TWO Elands late

Balliol (proposed)
Athena (fitted)

Just warming up

Hi Leif

The Ambassador is on the main list as it used dart for sole motive power unlike the Lancaster testbed that used mixed.

Didn't know about the Ambassador. Was it for test work, or a proposed version?

Purely a testbed for new version of the Dart and general Dart developement.

The Darts on F.27, Freindships, Accountant and 748 etc were bigger than the Viscounts and it tested out those versions for the twin Dart aircraft.

The Ambassador also flew with Napier Elands and RR Tynes as well :-O

I suppose the ultimate version of the Dart was the Mk. 12 - fitted to the 780? And the YS-11 had similar power.

The Argosy could have done with those.
